  2. Schematic, Gearsets P1 P2 P3 This transmission has three planetary gearsets: P1, P2, and P3. The P1 carrier is connected to the P2 ring gear; the P2 carrier is connected to the P3 ring gear; and the P2 and P3 sun gears are also connected. The P3 carrier connects to the output shaft.   3. Schematic, Driving Members C1 C2 P1 P2 P3 The C1 clutch can drive the P2 and P3 sun gears. The C2 clutch can drive the P2 carrier and the P3 ring gear. The P1 sun gear is always driven by the input shaft. Tom Birch, 8/07

  4. Reaction Members P1 P2 P3 C3 C4 C5 The C3 clutch can hold the P1 ring gear. The C4 clutch can hold the P1 carrier and P2 ring gear. The C5 clutch can hold the P2 carrier and P3 ring gear. Tom Birch, 8/07

  5. Neutral P1 P2 P3 C5 The P1 sun gear is driven, and the C5 clutch is applied to prepare for either 1st or reverse gear. Power will not transfer without a reaction member in the P1 gearset. Tom Birch, 8/07

  6. First Gear C1 Ratio: 3.1:1 P1 P2 P3 C5 The C1 clutch is applied to drive the P2 & P3 sun gears while the ring gear is held by the C5 clutch.This produces a 3.1:1 reduction in the P3 gearset. Input Reaction Output Tom Birch, 8/07

  7. Second Gear C1 Ratio: 1.18:1 P1 P2 P3 C4 The C1 clutch stays applied to drive the P2 & P3 sun gears while the P2 ring gear & P1 carrier is held by the C4 clutch.This produces a reduction in the P2 and P3 gearsets. Input Reaction Output Tom Birch, 8/07

  8. Third Gear C1 Ratio: 1.41:1 P1 P2 P3 C3 The C1 clutch stays applied to drive the P2 & P3 sun gears while the P1 ring gear is held by the C3 clutch.This produces a reduction in the P1, P2, and P3 gearsets. Input Reaction Output Tom Birch, 8/07

  9. Fourth Gear Ratio: 1.41:1 C1 C2 Ratio: 1:1 P1 P2 P3 The C1 clutch stays applied to drive the P2 & P3 sun gears while the C2 clutch is applied to drive the P2 carrier and P3 ring gear.This locks the P3 gearset. Input Reaction Output Tom Birch, 8/07

  10. Fifth Gear C2 Ratio: 0.71:1 P1 P2 P3 C3 The C2 clutch stays applied to drive the P2 carrier & P3 ring gear; while the P1 sun gear is driven by the input shaft. The P1 ring gear is held by the C3 clutch.This produces an overdrive ratio. Input Reaction Output Tom Birch, 8/07

  11. Reverse Ratio:4.49:1 P1 P2 P3 C3 C5 The C3 clutch is applied to hold the P1 ring gear, and the C5 clutch is applied to hold the P2 carrier and the P3 ring gear. The P1 gearset is in reduction; the P2 gearset is in reverse OD; and the P3 gearset is in reduction. Input Reaction Output Tom Birch, 8/07
