  1. Active Adventures on a Yoga Retreat

  2. Taking part in a yoga retreat is a fantastic way to deepen your practice. You’ll likely get to spend a lot of time in a beautiful, natural setting, with fellow travelers who share many of your same interests. Yoga retreats are a great way to truly immerse yourself in the practice of yoga. Depending on the type of retreat that you’re attending, there might be also be a variety of excursions worth exploring as well. While the yoga postures, breathing techniques, and meditation will have you focused on your internal state during classes, you might also enjoy the option to explore a bit of your external world as well.

  3. While different destinations will offer varying opportunities, it’s almost always worthwhile to venture out a bit to see more of the area you’re visiting, getting a feel for the landscape and the culture. So if you’d like to mix in a bit of excitement and adventure to your time away, we encourage you to make the most of your travels. With that in mind, here are a few of the options we think you’ll find rewarding if you venture to Los Cabos: Sea Kayaking When staying near the ocean, it’s wonderful to have a view of the water. Even

  4. more inspiring is to have a view from the water. Leaving shore in a sea kayak gives you a tremendous freedom – and a tremendous perspective as you look back toward shore. Kayaking is particularly beautiful on the Baja peninsula where you have the sharp contrast between the arid desert and mountains surrounded by the deep blue sea. In addition to paddling out on the open water between calmer coves, you’ll also have the opportunity to snorkel along some rocky reefs that offer an abundance of colorful fish and sea life. You might even catch sight of a couple of whales in the right season.

  5. Whale Watching Here in Baja, whale migration season starts around the last week of December and extends until the end of March, peaking in late-January and February. During that time, there are gray whales and humpbacks that swim our waters, following the nutrient-rich plankton that they feed upon and seeking out warmer waters to calve their young. While you can often spot these majestic creatures from the beach, getting out on the water in a private boat tour gives you the chance to get a closer view. The boat ride will take you from the Cabo marina out past the famed Cabo Arch and Lover’s Beach to open water. Keep your eyes peeled and you might even get lucky enough to see a full breach!

  6. Surfing Surfing is another activity that can be the perfect complement to your yoga practice. You’ve probably heard the phrases go with the flow and ride the waves. If you get out in the ocean with a surfboard, you’ll be able to experience this in an entirely new way. Surfing is a fantastic way to get in synch with the rhythms of nature and the sea. Catching a wave can be challenging, but with expert instruction, you’ll be up on your board in no time. We highly recommend surf lessons for beginners. It will make the experience a whole lot more satisfying.

  7. Hiking Heading out for a hike is an excellent way to get to acquainted with a new destination. With a sturdy set of hiking boots and a well-marked trail, you’ll get to see the landscape – and possibly wildlife - up close and personal. In Baja, there are options to hike up in the mountains, up dried out river beds, or along the coastline. You can set out on your own or take a guided hike where a trained naturalist will explain a bit about the flora and fauna as well as the cultural and geologic history of the area.

  8. Horseback riding Horseback riding is another great option for exploring a new area. You get to cover a lot of ground and your trusty steed will do most of the work. Saunter along the beach, head out to the point for a stunning view, and enjoy your time hunkered down in the saddle. Giddyup! Visit Local Towns When traveling to new places, it’s always nice to visit a nearby city or town to get a feel for how the locals live. See the sights, pop into a neighborhood café, shop the stores for handicrafts, or check out the art scene at a couple of galleries.

  9. In Los Cabos, options include the bustling tourist town of Cabo San Lucas, the quieter colonial town of San Jose and the quaint artist community of Todos Santos. Each offers a unique experience and a different window into local life at the tip of the Baja peninsula. When you leave home for a yoga retreat, your first priority will obviously be to dive deep into the practices of yoga and meditation. If your schedule permits, then it’s a great idea to take some extra time to explore the area and head out on an adventure. You’ll likely find it to be a rewarding complement to your retreat – one that will broaden your horizons and make the whole experience even more rewarding.
