  2. Editorial W e often hear about the need to create social movements to tackle a number of entrenched global challenges such as promoting greater income equality, ending extreme proverty and combatting climate change. Technological revolution is a dramatic social change in an important structures brought about relatively quickly by the introduction of some new technology. Such revolutions have brought many of the major revolutions in human history and have very large long-term consequences; ethical assessment of the desirability of possible future technological revolutions in interior designing is a very important topic. The Tiny House Movement is an intentional, inspired and admittedly adorable form of extreme downsizing and around 2.4 x 5 meters. Believe it or not, these pocket-sized dwellings have a rather strict system of classification. People might be surprised by this ideology and would have thought about who is buying these tiny houses. According to a research it is found that two-fifths of “tiny house people” are over 50 years old and 55% are women. This concept is gradually being accepted and adopted worldwide and being environment friendly is one of the many reasons why people desire to create a more sustainable lifestyle. These tiny houses are proven to be energy efficient for numerous reasons and as they are small in size they require less lighting, heating as well as cooling the space. The size of families seems to have become smaller in the recent decades. It is cited as a kind of small-scale revolt against a culture of additional space, this traditional way of living is believed to be a sign of luxury and wealth and materialism. Such homes are about living simply, and yet still with everything you need. For many people it's about freedom from debt and having the economic freedom to live a bigger life, instead of having a bigger house. The Rise in Tiny House Movement The financial benefits of tiny houses are very much considerable as they can be built for less than the cost of most cars. They can also have same lifespan of a conventional home as they are built within the same quality. There is a revolution of change going on in the interior industry where e-commerce interior design companies are offering great opportunities to work and grow. India is developing and people are becoming aware of their interiors so there is a vast opportunities for Interior designers in coming years. Moreover, this concept can prove financially viable for those for whom a home of their own remains a far-fetched idea for their whole life. Shweta Priyadarshini Shweta Priyadarshini

  9. Payal Kapoor Interior Designer Payal Kapoor Payal Kapoor Interior Designer Providing the Correct Balance of the Visual Appeal and the Correct Planning 1. Tell us something about your company? The young and dynamic firm aims at creating a unique interior experience for every client on the basis of the brief given. Through our work we aim to enrich the overall experience of the client by providing the correct balance of the visual appeal and the correct planning. Keeping in mind the budget, which is an essential and important factor to design a space, we have always had a reputation of being an innovative practice ,delivering satisfactory and creative end product. Vision is an interior-architectural design practice established by Ms Payal Kapoor in year 1991. Its team consists of competent team of professionals. i.e., Architects, MEP consultants, structural engineers, Civil Engineers, Interior Designers backed by our entire team of supervisors, upholsters, electricians, plumbers, carpenter, electrician, mason, polisher, POP etc. is headed by Ms. Payal Kapoor an interior designer of an international repute and member of association of designers. 3. Tell us something about the Founder/CEO of your company. 2. What kinds of ‘unique interior’ designing solutions or services are offered by your company at par with the current industry standards? After graduation from the Interiors School in 1987, the Executive Director of Manasara, one of the leading Interior Design Houses in the country, handpicked her. 10 DECEMBER 2018

  10. Interview with Insights Success After getting sufficient exposure at Manasara, she was offered a challenging opportunity by the promoters of “Dream City” and was appointed by them as senior advisor of their design firm “Craftsmen”. The projects by this firm were mostly executed on turnkey basis. She became conversant working with labour and all machinery at the grass root level something that is required if you want to get good craftsmanship, maintain timelines and work within budgets. Under her Supervision the company diversified from making panel doors and windows to excellent quality Furniture and executed a number of Projects on Turnkey Basis. In her own words Payal Kapoor says “After putting my efforts, I felt that my creativity and identity as an Interior Designer was being encroached upon. Hence, I decided to launch my own in 1991 and launched my own design firm by the name of “Visions”. Thus, began the process of institutionalization of her Design Genius.” 4. What is the current scenario of ‘interior designing’ segment according to you? How are you contributing to making it better? Earlier the buildings designed across the globe provided instructive examples of sustainable solutions to building problems. Today the modern approach to interior and architecture has led to standardization and repetition of the designs due to easy accessibility to internet. In my point of view a lot of work today has been an outcome of ‘cut –copy –paste’ ideology. Also I feel sensitivity to nature is what is missing and of great concern today. We believe in creating a new and unique experience and space for each client depending on the brief, place, climate and financial constraints. Our firm thrives on creating sustainable buildings maximizing the natural light and ventilation as well as providing courtyards or landscaped gardens wherever possible instead of following the trend of building concrete jungles. We try to use the locally available materials that are climatically responsive and appropriate. 5. What tool/technique does your company use to deliver the safer, economical, and more artistic interior designs to the customers? We at Visions believe in keeping transparency in terms of the design as well as the materials used. Our aim is to provide a long term solution to the clients in terms of low maintenance for which we suggest the use of those materials that are environmentally friendly and creates a 11 DECEMBER 2018

  11. will cause significant influence on ecological environment. safer and comfortable place for the users. For example using a lot of glass in external windows can definitely bring in a lot of natural light but Glass absorbs heat and acts as a greenhouse, hence are not suitable for hot climates. So every design is subjective to the place, climate, client’s choice as well as the budget. Considering that in many cases we are supposed to design economically, we try not to compromise on the uniqueness and the creativity of the design. Following the ideology of less is more and keeping in mind the budget, we have always come up with a new and artistic design with the help of using alternative materials that might be cheaper in cost but helps in achieving an overall positive design experience. We also pride ourselves in working on design brief of client, his budgets and timelines yet keeping our aesthetic credibility intact, trendy and fresh. Therefore, as a pillar industry of the national economy, we not only need to develop civil engineering in order to meet the needs of economic and social development, but also pay attention to environmental protection, resource conservation, as well as promote sustainable development strategies. 7. What were the major challenges you faced at the initial phase and how did you overcome it? What were the opportunities that came your way through these challenges? One of the biggest challengers young interior designers face is selling big ideas. Often times, you only have pictures or a floor plan to try and express the feel of an entire room. It’s hard to sell something that doesn’t physically exist. Do whatever it takes to get your ideas across. From fabric samples to mood boards, your clients will always appreciate the extra effort to help them understand the vision. Maintaning books was also a challenge in the initial phase from invoices to purchase orders, accounting can get overwhelming. Biggest challenge was to get the payments on time from the client even after completing the project on time. 6. What strategies/techniques do you follow to surpass the various interior disciplines such as fire-safety, architectural programming, cost estimating, civil engineering, and more? How are you shaping yourself to become extraordinary in this sector? We ensure that there should always be an alternative escape route in the case of a fire. This can be difficult in buildings with open plan design or single staircase escape routes. A fire strategy sets out the means of escape and measures that have been put in place to prevent fire and, if one should occur, to limit its spread. Fire strategies should be developed at the same time as the blueprint for the building. They are specific and tailored to each individual building. 8. Where is your company heading? How your company is benefiting your clients in this competitive world? What is your success mantra? We are above board in our practice and maintain complete transparency, comfort factor of client at all levels and work hand in glove as a team. After completing over 500 projects in different fields of hospitality, residential, institutes, saloons, spas, trains and restaurants we are aiming at doing the interior facelift in varied fields all across the globe. We feel that one person with an idea is equal to a thousand who have only opinions. We at visions are continuously striving to provide high quality Interior Solutions to our client’s at most reasonable prices. This commitment to quality has led us to implement a Total Quality Management (TQM) program in our organization, we also intend to achieve ISO status soon, this will act as further affirmation of our quality and would make us one of the few interior Design Houses in the world to have an ISO status. Also since our designs are not repetitive, each project is unique. Cost estimation should be there since the very first day of conceptualization as it provides the framework for cost control through the lifecycle of any initiative. Cost control is making sure you stay within the budget set during the cost estimating and cost planning processes. Selection of materials, construction techniques, sourcing of materials and effective planning are some of the ways where we can estimate the cost throughout the process. Civil engineering is one of the most important production activities that human affecting the natural environment. Among them, the construction materials production and use, engineering design, construction, use of the project after completed and removal after scrapped and other processes have to consume large amounts of energy, and continue to produce waste, and these issues 12 DECEMBER 2018

  12. 9. Share with us your piece of advice to the young entrepreneurs in the Interior Designing space. For interior design firms, time management skills are a must. There are only so many hours in a day and dozens of things need to get done. Organizing your time allows you to budget your hours effectively, prioritize projects, and stay on schedule to meet your forever looming deadlines. Maybe your client wants the project done next month—or maybe next week. Whatever the timeline may be, interior designers often find themselves working within tight turnarounds. This is where time management and organizational skills are really put to the test. One of the hardest roles of interior designers is introducing the latest trends, while maintaining a sense of timeless style. You don’t want your client to feel frustrated when a space is outdated after a few months. Staying on top of trends and knowing how to tastefully introduce them is one of the greatest creative skills for designers to master. 10. Please tell us about your current projects. Which are your serving domains? We pride ourselves as one of the very few firms having had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects - trains, ships, simulators, heritage palace properties to trendy hotels, uber luxury homes, institutes, schools, offices, commercial malls, restaurants, bars and night clubs. Hence we do not capsulate ourselves in a typical mould or restrict ourselves to being generic. We like to experiment, work and put our best foot forward for all sorts of project relating to architectural interiors both on consultancy or turnkey basis. 11. How do you see the future of interior designers? Tell us something about your upcoming services/plans. We feel that this field is for very focused, innovative, hardworking and honest professionals who are willing to grow with time, it needs headwork, constant personal growth with time and trends. Hence anyone who is stagnant and not focused will lose out over a period of time. Competition is growing by heaps and bounds, hence this field requires constant research, keeping abreast with trends, sources, ever-growing materials in market. Also since the world is so shrink thanks to the social media and internet, one needs to have the art to adapt and imbibe quickly and move with times and set trends as front runners in this field. 13 DECEMBER 2018

  13. Vikrant Tike Principal Designer Amita Kulkarni Founders & Principal Architect 14 DECEMBER 2018

  14. Interview with Insights Success SAV company? ARCHITECTURE Design A Platform To Explore Multiple Curiosities Between Places, Stories And Cultures & 1. Tell us something about your SAV is an international award winning architecture and design studio producing highly original, contemporary and intra-disciplinary work. We see our studio as a platform to explore multiple curiosities between spaces, stories and culture. Combining advanced digital technology with traditional craftsmanship we strive to create spaces that are experiential, evocative and extraordinary. great for our clients who get multiple inputs when they bring us to a project. We are also always adapting to different constraints of time, budgets and skills as well as fluidly interchanging between research, testing and fabricating. 3. Tell us something about the Founder/CEO of your company. The founders, principal architect Amita Kulkarni and principal designer Vikrant Tike, are both alumni of the prestigious AA School of Architecture, London, and bring their varied interests to the table to create a wholistic offering. She obtained a master’s degree in Architecture and Urbanism, while he completed his undergraduate architectural studies and obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Spatial Performance and Design. After the AA, they both worked for leading international design practices like Zaha Hadid and Norman Foster which helped to shape their current body of work. Founded in 2011, our work has already grown across different continents and involves a wide range of project portfolio consisting of landscapes, highrises, facades, mixed use masterplans, hotels, resorts, private houses, interiors, installations, exhibitions, furniture and objects. 2. What kinds of ‘unique interior’ designing solutions or services are offered by your company at par with the current industry standards? As a design based studio, we focus a lot on bringing a unique story and experience to all our interior space. Since we are a lot about fabrication and design, we offer unique and interesting ways of ‘making’ for our interior projects especially with furniture. Due to our training at the AA, both myself and Vikrant have the ability to bribe different design disciplines of architecture, interiors, graphics and furniture, which is 4. What is the current scenario of ‘interior designing’ segment according to you? How are you contributing to making it better? Being trained as architects, we see interiors as part of our living environment; an extension of our life and hence its critical to design our spaces that enhance and elevate our quality of living. All our interior projects are shaped from thinking rather than decorating, from experiencing rather than consuming, with a focus on the ‘why’ rather than the ‘what’. 5. What tool/technique does your company use to deliver the safer, economical, and more artistic interior designs to the customers? We believe in a critical thought process, where we are not afraid to learn from mistakes, as well as have the ability to constantly grow and adapt to a changing world. That way we always like to upgrade our own outputs allowing to integrate new technologies to create healthier and effective solutions both for costs as well as resources in our interior projects. 15 DECEMBER 2018

  15. 6. What strategies/techniques do you follow to surpass the various interior disciplines such as fire-safety, architectural programming, cost estimating, civil engineering, and more? How are you shaping yourself to become extraordinary in this sector? We like to think through in a 360 degree manner when we are at concept stage itself. As a team we like to focus a lot of prefabrication as that allows for greater design and cost control. We are a team of architects, designers and makers and hence fabrication, engineering and material research form the core of our studio. This gives us extraordinary control in our details and execution of our innovative designs which otherwise would have been compromised due to lack of knowledge in both costs and making. 7. What were the major challenges you faced at the initial phase and how did you overcome it? What were the opportunities that came your way through these challenges? The great thing about a designer is that every challenge can be viewed as an opportunity to innovate, so we like to challenge our own working processes from time to time. One of the challenges particularly we find in India is the amount of interior work done on site resulting in higher timelines and costs as well as lower quality and workmanship as. We like to overcome this by ensuring most of our furniture is done off-site which gives greater control of designs as well as quality in our execution. Another major challenge is the value of design. Most clients will happily pay for consumer product but will find it difficult to pay design related costs as people don’t understand that greater design inputs will not only have quality in their spaces adding value to their everyday life as well ensure things are built with care and attention. However, we find that view is changing across India both within the industry as well as for the end consumer but much slower than the need. 8. Where is your company heading? How your company is benefiting your clients in this competitive world? What is your success mantra? As designers from the 21st century, we believe in design and technological research as well as thinking agility in adapting to the future. We constantly think of our environment as a single global planet that we live on with limited resources. That automates to our dedication in seeing resourcefulness as a key driver both in design and performance. There is no success mantra for good design. It’s a constant effort and drives to grow better than the previous day and the ability to learn from your mistakes. For India we also constantly think laterally when it comes to designing better built environments as we greatly believe in working with reusing existing low-tech solutions that work sensitively and effectively. 9. Share with us your piece of advice to the young entrepreneurs in the Interior Designing space. Currently India is an emerging place; wherein things are constantly changing, rapidly adapting and where we feel there is a huge opportunity in design ; especially interior design to make a huge difference to the kind and quality of spaces we are making. The only advise to anyone within the interior design space especially younger startups in India is ‘quality’ over ‘quantity’ as its very tempting to take a huge volume of work due to the surrounding context and situation ; but eventually dilutes everything from our thoughts, our products and eventually our space. 10. Please tell us about your current projects. Which are your serving domains? One of the most interesting projects in the studio that we have recently completed is for a large 7000 soft open plan interiors for a design and communications agency that defines the ‘future of working environments’ by overlapping live, work and social spaces creatively. The other is an ongoing project that we have given considerable time is a boutique development of three large villas in Goa that compromise of three thoughtfully developed villas called the Sun, Moon and Earth. These villas define our emphasis on creating architecture and interior design redefining luxury as a series of narrative and timeless experiences. 11. How do you see the future of interior designers? Tell us something about your upcoming services/plans. As a studio we are focusing a lot on understanding the ‘future of design’ especially within workplaces and living. For us working and living has become a flexible stretchable space that is getting more and more overlapped. A lot of new places like We work are capturing this, but we feel there is a huge potential still left to be explored where new technologies and methods of working change how we move beyond the technological era of the 1990’s to a more sociable, interweaved post dot-com physical spaces; that give high quality, flexible and much more experiential interior environments that have a strong connection with nature and communities. 16 DECEMBER 2018

However, with the kind of perseverance and innovation that the company showed in the projects that they were able to win hearts as well as new projects on a continual basis. Another challenge that it also faced in working in the early days was that contractors, as well as workers, did not take a woman leader very seriously. The future of interior design seems bright with the help of changing ideas and applications. The future is extremely bright for those that are open to experimenting with new ideas, materials, and designs. 21. Interior Talk Vertical Garden: An Antidote to Urban Alienation from Nature P In the current times where there are overcrowded living environments, there is no space to breathe and pollution is everywhere, the thought of having a home with a garden looks very farfetched. However, this isn’t the case. Anybody can have their very own green space and can participate in the pleasure of growing and harvesting his food. This will help in benefiting from the self-sufficiency and superior nutrition. Vertical Gardening an innovative and highly productive growing system that uses bottom-up and top-down support for a wide variety of plants in both small and large size. The projects designed on this technique are ideal for creating layered gardens, not just on walls, but also on window sills, balconies, terraces, and other imaginatively created nooks and crannies. eople like changing their home regularly, but few are experts at interior design. Accenting home with natural elements, from flora and fauna to stonework and water features, makes it an instantly inviting space for guests. 23 DECEMBER 2018

  22. The green walls are not only beautiful but also helpful in enlivening the ambiances. A large windowless wall left alone in a spacious house can be the perfect canvas, for vertical gardening. It is the case of making the most of the space unused. Vertical gardens are bound to become more and more popular in the times to come; in fact, they might well become necessities. It provides several aesthetic, economic, physiological and environmental benefits and enables one to maximize and fully utilize limited space, especially in congested urban areas. laying horizontally in rows against a wall or fence. In either case, one would drill holes into the tube for the plants to grow out. With a vertical standing tube, one can plant 360 degrees around the pipe. Living walls one of the types of vertical gardens are composed of pre-vegetated panels, vertical modules or planted blankets. These panels can be made of plastic, expanded polystyrene, synthetic, clay, fabric, metal, and concrete, and support a great diversity and density of plant species. Living walls need more protection than green facades because of its diversity and density of vegetation. Made up with three parts a metal frame, a PVC layer and an air layer that does not need soil supports a variety of plant species, such as a mixture of vegetation, perennial flowers, and ferns and low shrubs, etc. Benefits of Vertical Gardening These walls offer direct environmental advances in reducing existing greenhouse and other volatile organic compounds from the polluted cities. As climatic changes will likely lead to more frequent, more severe, and longer heat waves during the summer months. It helps reducing heat by deflecting radiation from the sun and releasing moisture into the atmosphere. These green walls provide thermal insulation to the buildings by keeping it fresh in summer whereas warm in winter that helps us save electricity. City officials worry that the intense summer heat could lead to uncomfortable conditions for residents, as well as a reduced tourist attraction in summer months. The usage of the vertical garden would decrease the usage of air conditions which would undoubtedly lead to a decrease in air pollution and hence would improve the climate. It can absorb heated gas in the air, lower both indoor and outdoor temperature, providing a healthier indoor air quality as well as a more beautiful space. Vertical Gardens provide economic and ecologic benefits as well as has an aesthetic value. The interests change with options such as different buildings, green wall technologies, plant selections, and plant coverage. The beauty lies with the addition of visual drama such as covering up views of plain or ugly walls and providing building protection. These walls provide a noise buffer which significantly reduces the outside noise and vibration (up to 40dB) inside the home and workplaces. Vertical gardens are catching the fancy of developers around the world. Regardless of where one lives one can always find space for vertical gardening and experience its offerings. Such type of interior designing is not a new concept, but recently it has indeed become popular. Like few plants can grow on walls by taking root in the substance of the wall itself. Typical of these are the small herbaceous species such as ivy-leaved toadflax, wallflower, and plants such as lichens, mosses, and grasses. However other species are naturally adapted to climbing up and over obstacles such as trees, shrubs, and rock faces. For these to raise positively on walls and buildings some support structure is usually essential. What’s excellent about vertical gardening is that one can use all sorts of containers in all variety of shapes and sizes. One can meet the needs of the environment by choosing the right type of vertical garden for space and can design a garden with PVC pipes standing straight up like a tower or 24 DECEMBER 2018

  26. Expert’s View INDIANS DEVELOPING the Skills to Expertise TO INTEGRATE Modern?y with Tradition D by chance. esign Is So Much More Than What We Think. It’s a state of mind. It’s an approach to a problem. It’s how you will feel. It’s something that is meaningful and deliberate & still so much more. And truth be told; design happened to me Since its inception, AMA’s motto has been ‘Making Sense Out of Space’ which we believe & carry religiously in each of our projects. I believe that a great design is the culmination of tri-party relationship between a designer, client and the space. My role in this relationship is to translate clients taste and lifestyle into their spaces while developing and maintaining a conceptual thread to ensure that the space reaches its maximum potential. Designing a home is always very challenging and motivating. Challenging because each individual needs/requirements are so different & peculiar as every person has his/her own taste & lifestyle to add to the design. It often happens that two members of the same family don’t reach a consensus during the planning stage and we have to find a mutually agreeable way out. But this is motivating also as it pushes us harder to create something new in each of our projects. 29 DECEMBER 2018

  27. Our design influences are grounded in a mix of contemporary culture and futuristic trends. “There is too much noise in design currently” hence tapping the current focus on functionality without clutter, we target our interior design spaces to be spacious, serene, and quiet. the controls. Create blips in the patterns. Get out of your comfort zone. Put yourself in harm’s way. I believe that we in India are growing only with the exposure received via technology (with the access to world information via platforms such as Facebook and Twitter) and are slowly overcoming our short comings. We have many companies today in the market dealing in modular kitchens, automated homes, etc. Sooner alarm systems and smoke detectors will become a compulsion in our houses. The use of cameras, remote lighting and scanners for doors has become a very common practice today. We are changing and changing for good – AMA Team Going Green Going Green is what we hear everywhere and people speak about it without knowing nothing about it. The idea of green technology is to conserve what we are loosing and to save the environment. My idea of going green is saving the mother earth from exploitation by using materials which are eco friendly. Let’s take the example of Bamboo trees & LED lights to discuss green technology We are changing and changing for good. The Market in India For me, wood is the most important element in any space especially in a house. Wood creates style and living. The business of wood is an ever expanding Market in India. Bamboo trees grow quickly. It takes 3-4 years for a bamboo tree to mature. It’s a fast process. They are light weight and strong, durable and easy to maintain. Its got more moisture resistant and hence is a very good option for wooden flooring. As we are experiencing a change in today’s market, people expectations have increased as they want everything expedited and perfect. Today the mentality is not to use furniture or designs in a house for 15-20 years but for a short span of 5 years. Everyone wants sleek and straight line look for their houses. Gone are the days when clients use to demand furniture and storage every where. Today all they want is more of open spaces. LED Lights are something that we use and are suggesting to more and more of our clients for direct as well as indirect lighting. They are a power saver in comparison to CFl or tube lights or traditional bulbs. They don’ produce heat & are available at very cheap rates in the market. We normally get 2-3 months to finish a 2-3 BHK house. Instead of making furniture on site we are moving to modular/ machine made furniture, modular kitchens, ready- made sofas, dinning etc. It helps us in meeting our project deadlines and at times turns out to be cheaper as well. The market is now ready to explore and many new international as well as Indian brands have entered the market and doing really well. Furniture, Tiles, Kitchen, accessories etc are available ready-made and the designs are altered and chosen to one’s choice as well. Acceptance of Ideas through Technology There is nothing as a different design, it’s the same thing done in different manner. It’s just that we need to think differently. The best creative thinking occurs outside of the usual systems at work. The problem is, most of us live and work inside the system. So you have to purposely jam 30 DECEMBER 2018

Moreover, there should be a colour pattern that can connect different components of rooms like ceiling, walls, tile and other flooring to create a mesmerizing effect. Illuminate the Space with Right ‘Lights’ Gone are those days when lights were just used to remove darkness. These days there is a popular demand to make up a space using both task and ambient lights. A Designer can use different lamps scattered around the area to throw the right amount of lights in all areas. In fact one can use dimmers as compared to conventional switches to give more versatility to your design. Moreover, don’t make a room too gloomy with opaque curtains or furniture and don't use extremely bright lights that will trouble eyes when it falls. Lighting can make or break the beauty of a room so use the right lights with the right brightness and colours that augment the quality of your overall design. Use Wall Art 'Wall Art' is one area on which many designers do not invest their much energy into and thus many times miss earning praises which they might have received had they kept it on the top priority. Wall art is not only about crafting some unique designs on the wall, but it is more than that. It gives more sense to room and help to amplify the beauty of whole space. Designers can use much famous 3D artwork using sculpture, and shadow boxes to add some more depth to the room and help create a mesmerizing illusion. Moreover, using rough textures, one can make space more intimate and grounded while using smooth texture one can bring a sleeker tone to the room. Right Accessories Increase the Richness of Interior Interior designing is not only a creative procedure but incremental as well. Moreover, in its hierarchy, one should not forget placing the right accessories in the space as par users need. It is although less complicated than the other aspects of interior designing but one need to have an understanding of which vase will goes well with a couch or a picture frame that goes well with a desk and vice versa! Fancy items, plants, designer couch, and carpet, can create wonder but don't get settle until all other work related to room gets complete. Moreover, keeping some free space without overcrowding too many accessories (especially the large ones) is what creates a long-lasting impression. Customization is of Prime Importance As a designer, you may have successfully completed many large projects and satisfied countless customers, but a designer has to understand the fact that each customer is different so his/her requirements and budget. The interior should reflect the personality and the standards of the people who are going to utilize that space. The design should be aligned to the interest and hobbies of the customer. Therefore, it is vital to understand the interests of clients first and then plan all the designing. Such approach inevitably leads to a far better result with the promise to satisfy customers completely. 38 DECEMBER 2018

Compliments and Social Responsibility SHROFFLEoN’s work has now found recognition, and the company has been awarded in various categories. A few prominent ones being “IFJ Gennext Awards, 2018” by Indexcellence Award, “Emerging Architect of The Year 2017” by Grohe-NDTV,” Best of Houzz Award,2018” , “Young Designer of the Year (Runner up) IIID”,” Young Architect of the Year - Archidesign and AD100”, an international competition “PISCENE GLOBAL POOL AWARDS (runner up)”, and more. Making its Mark SHROFFLEoN’s methodology is characterized by an in- depth inquiry and a collaborative intellectual exchange: the design work undergoes intensive research and an experimental approach. The strength of the studio lies in inspired conceptual thinking, backed by the demonstrated experience, skills and technical expertise to competently translate abstract client ideas into reality. Restricting the number of projects taken at a time gives it the luxury of time and energy for innovation and attention to detail. On the societal front, both Maria and Kayzad were until recently involved in academia and associated with most of the leading schools within the city. SHROFFLEoN also tends to take on a certain number of pro bono jobs for nonprofits and institutions assisting the underprivileged. It is also a part of various information exchanging platforms where designers freely share knowledge, expertise, and contacts, allowing for a free flow of information and mentor-mentee relationships. The Company follows best practices on site where possible, insurance, hard hats, steel-tipped shoes, etc. It also dedicates a fair amount of time to the detailing that goes into construction. Taking clues from material sizes and detailing possibilities, it tends to express and highlight the making, which tends to result in more economical solutions. Differentiating its work from others is its adherence to natural materials – stones and woods primarily, where possible and staying clear of ornamentation, patterns and overuse of different materials. Keeping up with the Future SHROFFLEoN’s current workload is primarily in the residential sector – interiors, a standalone bungalow in Jogeshwari and a midrise developer building in Bandra. It is also working on a couple of commercial interior projects in Mumbai, as well as on the landscape on a podium for the development in South Mumbai. Creating Clientele SHROFFLEoN’s journey so far has met its fair share of challenges too. Initial years lacked projects due to clients’ skepticism because its portfolio had unrealized projects. Once workflow started, they also realized the immense amount of work that went into building a project and the fact that design is but a small aspect in the gambit of issues one takes into consideration. Initially, they took up a few small projects – a 300sqft balcony overlooking the sea, a 250sqft dental clinic and a 1500sqft French restaurant in South Mumbai. Additionally, it has also started another company called WallUp –which provides the clients with space efficient layouts tailored to their requirements within a short time span at a negligible cost. The intention is to acknowledge that space distribution is vital and to make accessible the services of an architect to an audience that would previously not even think of approaching a professional for home improvement or office planning advice. Advising young entrepreneurs tonever give up, Maria and Kayzad at SHROFFLEoN continue their journey, bringing class to every home and uniqueness in every project they take up. As its work gathered momentum and understanding increased, so did the clientele. The company’s efforts about detailing, extreme accessibility for the clients, and open 41 DECEMBER 2018

Painters generate sketches as products of their creative process, exploring the possibilities of composition in the form of pencil drawings before a finalized painting. Architects explore many design possibilities through design sketching, hard-line drawings, physical models, and manufacturing artifacts for the exploration of diverse ideas. Davda. Blending their love for parametric design with the increasingly popular concept of biomimicry, the two architects display a rather unusual approach to design. A portfolio pepped up with diverse design explorations, their work ranges from product design to Architectural high rises, Intriguing, to say the least, the creative outputs of the studio emerge as a rich, multi-layered palimpsest of design thoughts and philosophies. one are the days when it was thought that interior design was just a pompous expression for a certain sensitivity and good taste in decorating a space. In Providing data-driven design solutions and integrating this computation based technology to the existing workflow are one of the strong suits where it strives to increase the overall efficiency of the project. Persistent Leaders of the Organization Two architects Seeja Sudhakaran and Khushbu Davda founded the Studio Emergence with a penchant for geometry in design and parametric process-based methodology. Most of their works are derived from nature and are biomimetic. The duo works on high rise residential building, hospitality interiors, and residential luxury projects. Their design methodology is very process- based and is driven by material exploration. E 10 INTERIOR DESIGNERS Most T H reative ‘ ‘ to Watch We believe in being hands on when it comes to exploring different fabrica?ng techniques and love to work with all digital fabrica?on processes Offering Turnkey Solutions Focusing on quality services, most of the designs are tailor-made for the context and user. It also has furniture and lighting design vertical where it fabricates and customizes unique pieces for designers and architects for their projects. Most designers have a great design sense and try to include parametric furniture in their plans; the firm helps in executing that bit of the project and working in collaboration with architects and designers. After working with some prestigious firms and having different design philosophies, they did graduation in Advanced design and digital Architecture(ADDA) from Elisava – Barcelona school of design and Engineering, which happens to be the oldest design school in Spain. The duo got exposed to a very different design process where materials and forms had to work together, and they had to be hands-on while building life-size prototypes. Seeja Sudhakaran & Seeja Sudhakaran & Khushbu Davda Khushbu Davda Founders regarding technological advancement in design. The company offers an overall design immersive experience to the end user. From the conceptual level to the execution, each stage is thought of, from the perspective of ease of understanding the designs and being involved in the process. For clients, it’s important to know what is in the designer’s mind; many times this communication is the key to having a successful and fruitful partnership. By the medium of computer renderings, virtual reality experiences and also prototyping, it ensures that the clients know the project well before plunging into the execution stage. “We were really inspired by this direct and very involved approach and wanted to work with the same methodology in India; thus STUDIO EMERGENCE started in 2015.” Advising the Budding Designers Interior design directly affects the user experience. Attention to detail and ergonomics should be of primary importancefor the younger ones. The duo believes that design is responsible in warping the user’s mood to an extent, the colors, the lighting, the seamless design experience will really elevate the mood. They further add that Interior design is a hands on profession, don’t be skeptical to learn carpentry or civil details from the karigars themselves, it really helps you design better. Strength lies in Designing Strong and Unique Futuristic Forms Be it interior of a space, a product or a building design, our design methodology remains the same and is dictated by moving towards the final product with a lot of integrity and questioning. It works with a lot of furniture design tailor-made for space. Each project is designed very specifically to the client’s lifestyle and their relationship with each area. The firm uses a lot of anthropometric data, how the client’s use each space throughout the day, site context, etc. as parameters for design. Digital fabrication techniques like using machining for fabrication and execution is one of the major strengths of the company. Being Sustainable The organization has minimum material wastage on site since all the material is meticulously documented in a BIM model and use of digital fabrication also reduces the wastage in the design stage itself. It loves to explore the boundaries of architecture and design by collaborating with experts from various fields like lighting, artists, bio hacking experts, computer engineers, etc. The background in academics keeps us grounded to the shift that is happening Futuristic Approach The organization is currently working on a couple of penthouse projects such as a duplex which is a dream sea facing house for a family of six. The design is unique to their experiences, travel stories, their functional relationships with the spaces they use. It has also created a family seating space which undulates to create a reading nook, couple’s seat, family entertainment zone, kid’s play area, all in one. “To create unique and beautiful products never to be repeated in other projects is something we try and work on regularly.’ 43 DECEMBER 2018
