  3. Let’s break it down. Black Streaks: It’s algae – Gloeocapsa magma to be exact. As the algae accumulate, it leaves behind a dark, hardened outer coating, aka streaks and stains. The algae actually feed on the limestone in shingles and destroy the granules. It’s caused by dirt, mold, and mildew accumulation
