  1. All about Trigger Finger problem, treatment and exercises Quite painful, trigger finger causes your fingers or thumb to lock while bending. The condition can affect any finger, more than once. When you get this condition in your thumb, it is called trigger thumb. What causes Trigger finger condition? Repeated movement or forceful use of fingers is to blame. The problem can also start when tendons (band of tissues that keep bones and muscles of your fingers connected) get inflamed.
