  1. Hernia surgery Types and Treatment

  2. Hernia is a very common term but few people know of its causes and treatment options. A hernia is a serious medical condition that needs immediate expert attention and treatment. A hernia occurs when an internal organ or other body part or a fatty tissue pushes through the muscle or tissue around it and cause pain and discomfort. Hernia most commonly occurs through a weakening in the muscles of the abdominal wall in the form of a bulge. Most hernias present as swellings that appear on exertion and disappear on lying down. Many a times they may go unnoticed. If they are inflamed and cause pain, immediate surgical intervention is needed to give relief to the patients. Your surgeon is the best person to decide the right treatment for hernia repair.

  3. If you are looking for Hernia repair surgery in Mumbai then you are at the right place as Dr. Aparna Govil Bhasker is specialist for hernia surgery and treatment. • It is easy to identify hernia as it appears as a bulge in abdomen, upper thigh, or near the belly button or groin area. The reason behind hernia is the pressure on the weak muscle or fascia. This can be present from birth or can happen later in the life because of • Frequently lifting heavy objects • Chronic cough or constipation • Persistent sneezing • Obesity or being over weight • Pregnancy • Chronic smokers also run a high risk of hernia as smoking and poor nutrition weaken the muscle structure. Hernia is most common in the age group of 40-70 years and males are more likely to suffer from hernia than females. • Types of hernias which require hernia surgery

  4. Inguinal hernia is the most common type of hernia and it develops in the inner groin area. • Femoral hernia affects the outer groin region • Incisional hernia is caused because of previous incisions (abdominal surgery) • Ventral hernia affects the ventral abdominal wall • Umbilical hernia occurs near the belly button • Hiatal hernia is seen along the upper stomach. • Hernia surgery • Hernia repair or hernioplasty or herniorrhaphy is a common procedure and is the only option to repair hernias. Depending on the size, severity, and location of hernia the surgeon can use any of the below two options to correct hernia

  5. Laparoscopic hernia repair: This type of procedure is minimally invasive and done using very small incisions around the abdomen. The laparoscopic instruments are inserted using through the incisions and the surgeon makes repair either using a surgical mesh or without it. Laparoscopic surgery has shorter recovery time. However, is not suitable for people with large hernias. Other benefits of this type of hernia repair include, less pain, less visible scarring, less incidents of infection and quicker return to normal routine life. • Open hernia repair surgery: this is done by making an incision around the abdomen and groin area. the surgeon then pushes the hernia back in to the place, applies a mesh and closes the incision. Open hernia surgery needs more recovery time than the laparoscopic repair.

  6. Robotic hernia surgery: Hernia surgeons may also use the latest robot assisted methods to treat hernia. In this the surgeon controls the instruments from a console to repair the hernia. The biggest advantage is the that in this type of hernia surgery the surgeons get a 3d view of inside the abdomen which makes the surgery more precise. • Surgical mesh • Hernia patients often hear the term surgical mesh. The surgical mesh is used by surgeons to strengthen the hernia repair and reduce the rate of hernia recurrence. The mesh is placed in such a way that it supports the weakened tissue. Most of the hernia operation in Mumbai are done with Surgical mesh used in hernia surgery are made of synthetic materials which can be either absorbable or non-absorbable. • Modern techniques and tools are used by best surgeons in hernia surgery to provide better patient outcomes.
