What is it
Web vs Internet
How it began
How it works
WHAT IS THE WEB?
Something a spider weaves
A universal database of knowledge
A global hypermedia network
THE WEB Vs THE INTERNET
Many people think the WWW is the same as the internet. This is false!
The internet refers to the physical side of the global network - a giant mass of cables and computers
The web is just one software application that utilises the internet
WORLD WIDE WEB
POP MAIL WEB E-MAIL
HOW DID IT BEGIN?
Proposed March 1989
Tim Berners-Lee (director W3C at MIT)
European Particle Physics Laboratory (CERN)
First web software end 1990
More people involved 1992
HOW DOES IT WORK?
World wide web Servers or HTTP servers
To access the Web you run a BROWSER
The browser can :-
Access files by - FTP
- GOPHER etc.
Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator
HYPERTEXT AND HYPERMEDIA
HyperText Markup Language (HTML) is the language used to create web documents
HyperText is basically the same as regular text
Contains links within text to other documents
Hypermedia is hypertext with a difference
Contains links to text and other media
Hypermedia simply combines hypertext and multimedia
WHAT’S ON THE WEB?
Virtually everything is available somewhere
It is cheaper to publish on the web than on paper or other electronic media
Many people these days talk of how they “surfed the net for hours”
But what do they mean?
Were they on Bondi Beach with a computer or looking at it on a computer?
SURFING THE WEB
Hypertext links called HYPERLINKS, can create a complex virtual web of connections
If you were to go to a web page and follow all the links you could find your self on a free associative tour of information known as
“SURFING THE WEB”
