Global Scenario

  • Cement is an essential component of

  • infrastructure development world over. It

  • is also the second largest consumable

  • item on the planet after water. (0.3 tonnes

  • per person)

  • Over the past decade, cement markets

  • have grown exceptionally well, till 2007

  • when construction softened. For China

  • alone, has grown at 10.5 % CAGR (from

  • 500 mt in 1998 to 1390 mt in 2008).

  • Though the growth rate is tapering off

  • from 13.3% to 5.3 % in the last two years.

  • Rest of the world consumption rate has

  • grown at an CAGR of 4% in the past

  • decade. Again just 1.7% growth in 2008.

  • Viability of location plays a major role, in the economics of cement manufacturing. Limestone reserves in 6 states paves way for cement industry clusters of Satna (MP), (leader in capacity as well as production), Chandrapur belt (North Andhra and Maharashtra), Gulbarga (Karnataka, East AP), Chanderia (South Rajasthan, Jawad and Neemuch in MP), Bilaspur (Chhattisgarh), Yerraguntla and Nalagonda in AP.

Trends in Indian Cement Production

  • Indian cement industry came of age after liberalization, after which its production and

  • capacity increased manifold.

  • Growth can be seen from 91 plants and 43 mtpa of cement production in 1990 had become 136

  • plants and 214 mtpa in April 2009.

  • Its capacity utilization has also increased during the same period from 78% to 91%
