  1. INTRODUCTION You can tell it is time to repaint the exterior of your home by observing the condition of your house. Do you see a nicely painted exterior that shows no signs of age or do you see a house that is showing less than perfect paint? Gonzalez Painters & Contractors has expertise in exterior house painting and can help you if you’re considering repainting. Let’s look at six signs that tell you it’s time to paint the exterior of your house in Raleigh NC.

  2. SIX SIGNS THAT TELL YOU IT’S TIME TO PAINT THE EXTERIOR OF YOUR HOUSE. 1. Paint Shows Signs of Wear 2. Faded and Discolored Paint 3. Cracked and Shrinking Caulk 4. You’re Putting the House on the Market 5. New Construction 6. It’s Been Five to Seven Years

  3. 1: PAINT SHOWS SIGNS OF WEAR If the paint is wearing, it might be bubbling, flaking, or cracking. Years of blazing sunshine, humidity, and icy winters can cause paint to flake and crack. Bubbling or cracked paint might indicate that you have wet rot, dry rot, or mold beneath the surface. To paint, replace any damaged parts before painting because the new paint won’t adhere to rotted wood.

  4. 2: FADED AND DISCOLORED PAINT When you see faded and discolored paint, you may find more than just an aging issue. Sun bleaching can cause the paint to fade but so can water intrusion. Paint fades over time in the sunlight and can be difficult to notice because it happens slowly. Dark paint colors will fade quicker than lighter colors.

  5. 3: CRACKED AND SHRINKING CAULK Only a professional painter should attempt exterior painting. After loose, crumbling caulk—or paint—is found between trim pieces, near the edges of siding, or elsewhere on the house, it is time to re-caulk and repaints the exterior. This will avoid potential water damage to the siding and better protect the exterior from further damage.

  6. 4: YOU’RE PUTTING THE HOUSE ON THE MARKET The appeal of the exterior of a house can have a major effect on potential buyers; the curb appeal is never more important than when a house goes on the market. If the paint job is old or poorly done, it reflects badly on the entire home. New paint can make your house look modern, clean, and inviting.

  7. 5: NEW CONSTRUCTION Contractors typically use pre-primed wood and only one coat of paint when building new construction. If you have a new house, ask your builder how many coats of paint were applied at the time of construction. If it was only one or two coats, it isn’t protecting very well because most contractors use cheaper paint instead of high-quality paint. If you have a new construction home and don’t know how the initial painting process was done, consider painting within five years of construction to ensure there is a solid layer of protection before there is time for a lot of damage to occur.

  8. 6: IT’S BEEN FIVE TO SEVEN YEARS When the average life of an exterior paint job is up to seven years, it’s time to repaint. The wood may be more susceptible to damage from the elements in drier climates, so painting may need to be done more often. Paint lasts different lengths of time in different climates. In the Midwest, for example, paint should be repainted every three to seven years, while in the Southwest climate, it can last seven to 10 years.
