LEMI-018B time diagram The operation of the data acquisition process in LEMI-018 is steered by means of interrupt signals with frequencies fint1=160 Hz and fint2= 10 Hz (c, d) coming from Synchronization unit, which is based on the very stable temperature compensated internal crystal 12.8 MHz oscillator. The falling edges of both interrupt signals coincide with 1PPS signal from GPS receiver within ? 0.5 ?s. The correction of the total phase delay of both analogue and digital filters is executed by a special procedure of the shifting of time scale. The time diagrams, which explain this procedure, are presented here. The plot of possible geomagnetic variation is presented in the upper line of time diagram (a). Let’s consider measurement process of the magnetic field at the moment of time corresponding to Mth UTC second (and Nth 0.1 UTC second). Due to the frequency behavior of the magnetometer analogue section the voltage corresponding to the magnetic field appears at the ADC input with delay ?t=12 ms ( b). The values of this voltage averaged during time interval tconv=6.157 ms periodically (with sampling frerquency Fs=160 Hz) are converted to the digital codes ( b, c). At the each step the filtration procedure involves 80 ADC’s samples. Due to the symmetry of the digital filter impulse response the result of the filtration should be referred to the moment of time between 40th and 41th samples and taking into account ADC conversion time tconv this moment practically coincides with 40th 160 Hz interrupt pulse ( c). In order to center filtered data to the 0.1 UTC second the filtration procedure starts as soon as 43 ADC samples after Nth pulse (or 11 samples after (N+2)th pulse) of the 10 Hz interrupt signal have received ( c, d). The microprocessor calculates filtered values for all three channels (it takes about 25 ms) and transfers these data ( f) through UART interface to the microprocessor MC2 of the data acquisition board. As it clearly seen from diagram (e), f the packet of digital data corresponding to the magnetic field at Mth UTC second (and Nth 0.1 UTC second) appears with time shift about 0.33 s. The described digital filtration procedure is repeated every 0.1 second, then the fourth (after the Nth 0.1 UTC second) packet of data corresponds to the selected moment of time. The test bench for frequency response and synchronization accuracy measurements Experimental confirmation of the specified synchronization accuracy was achieved by using specially developed equipment. The frequency response and synchronization tests are based on the black-box testing procedure. This procedure includes generation of the GPS synchronised alternative magnetic filed surronding magnetic sensor as the input and analysis of the computer file with the magnetic data record as the output. Using Fourier transformation of the output data the information about the amplitude and phase response of the magnetometer is extracted. Experimental confirmation of the specified synchronization accuracy was achieved by using specially developed equipment. The frequency response and synchronization tests are based on the black-box testing procedure. This procedure includes generation of the GPS synchronised alternative magnetic filed surronding magnetic sensor as the input and analysis of the computer file with the magnetic data record as the output. Using Fourier transformation of the output data the information about the amplitude and phase response of the magnetometer is extracted.

    32. CONCLUSION The new instrument compatible with 1-second INTERMAGNET standard was created and partially tested. The key parameters of the magnetometer LEMI-018: low time shift of acquired data (specified <10 ms, really ?1 ms); excellent resolution (1pT); low noise level (< 4 pT/Hz1/2 , could be decreased to 1 pT by using appropriate flux-gate sensor); deep suppression of the power mains interference (> 120 dB); uninterruptible operation due to embedded rechargeable battery and compact flash card for storing acquired data; prolonged GPS antenna cable (40 m) for using inside buildings make the instrument useful for wide geophysical applications, where high quality magnetic measurements are required. The proposals from potential users are welcome at the development of commercial version of the instrument (termination at the end of 2008).
