COURSE OBJECTIVES • Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: • Learn the polymer definitions, different classification systems, the stereochemistry of polymers and their physical and chemical properties. • Learn the general methods for polymer synthesis (condensation and addition polymerization). • Learn what is the copolymerization. • Learn the different types of polymerization techniques and industrial applications. • Learn about oil (origin, composition, importance) and methods of petrochemicals production. • Learn about composition and petrochemicals from natural gas.

Topics to be Covered • Introduction and definitions, • General methods for Polymer Synthesis; Condensation polymerization and Addition polymerization.(10 hours) • 1st Midterm Exam • 2) Different polymerization techniques and applications.(4 hours) • 3) Copolymerization. (4 hours) • 4) Degradation and stabilization of polymers. (2 hours) • 5) Petroleum and petrochemicals from benzene, toluene and xylene.(4 hours) • 2ndMidterm Exam • 6) Petrochemicals from natural gas.(4 hours)
