  1. The Music Industry A Presentation by Courtney Kramer, Becky Searing and Mary Lou Qualler from Kettle Moraine Middle School

  2. The Problem Here is the graph of how money is distributed among those involved in creating a CD. The songwriters are not happy with the amount of money they are getting. What should be done about the request? Why?

  3. The Field Trip to Cascio Music Super Store • As an introduction to our project, the students visited a retail store. • The store featured • Musical instruments • A repair department • Sheet music • Local artists • Recording studio

  4. The students enjoyed the tour of the retail store. There were a variety of things to look at.

  5. Research • In the reading classes, the students researched one of the roles. • The students then worked together in groups of three (all from the same role) to compose a persuasive essay based on their research.

  6. Speakers from the “Real World” After the students completed their research, they heard personal experiences from a true songwriter, a singer, and a man that worked at Casico.

  7. POWERPOINT • The groups of three (all from the same role) created PowerPoint presentations. • The students presented their role to the class via PowerPoint.

  8. Songwriters Shelley Sean Will

  9. The Role of a Songwriter • Writes lyrics and music for performing artists.

  10. Songwriter's Responsibilities • Write songs • Create lyrics • Sell songs to artists • Are present at recording studios to make sure their song is the way they want it

  11. Only 3%? • Songwriters only receive 3% of the money made on a CD • We feel that songwriters should get more money because they are the base of making CDs. • If there were no more songwriters, there would be no more music!

  12. Remember... Without songwriters, there would be no more music as we know it!

  13. After the presentations, groups of six students debated what would be the best answer to the question. They created a new graph based on their decision. The graphs were presented to the class along with their rationale behind their decision. Making a Decision
