  1. DO NOT PANIC: HOW TO HAVE A SAFE STUDY ABROAD EXPERIENCE What If while on your way back home you meet with an accident in a foreign land? You are travelling alone and somehow your mobile has gone off. What will you do now? Chances are you will be worried big time. You will have all sorts of fears occupying your space about what to do now. If you can say to yourself that time, “O…..that’s a bit inconvenient”, you will safely come over the situation with ease. I am reminded of a highly effective training exercise of F1 drivers. During training exercise often their cars push towards the dead end, the trainer constantly yells at them to not look in that direction but rather in the one they want to take the car back in. They forcibly move the driver’s neck towards a safe direction even when the car is about to hit the wall. Surprisingly enough, the F1 racer acts in sync with the direction and lands safely in the end. During times of crisis look not at the problem, but the solution. And the solution we believe is always there. Studying abroad may land you in a similar situation. To hit the panic button is the worst you could do to yourself. After all, it’s by killing rather than getting killed that you will win. Keeping few basic survival skills will help you incredibly in taking on challenges face to face with clarity and ensure

  2. that you win. The present article is intended to serve as a SURVIVAL TOOLKIT IN CRISIS SITUATION. SECURE IMPORTANT NUMBERS Maintain a list of important contacts in both your mobile and a diary (YES, we literally want you to maintain a hard copy). An electronic gadget may betray you anytime, the safest and the most secure way of recording is still an age-old diary. Keep it in safe custody always hidden inside your pocket. DON’T WORRY, PARTY We all understand that on some days you will party all night because your elders won’t be nearby watching you. Partying isn’t anything bad, being vulnerable is. Just make sure you know what is the stuff you are having? Whether it be a drink or any food, first have it in very small quantity, if it feels okay go ahead, if not bluntly refuse. Just don’t keep your eyes closed, be in control always. APPLE PEELERS AND CUTTERS Small pocket knives (up to 2.36 inches) and foil cutters can always be carried on without restriction for all purposes. Keep them handy. In fact, you should seek information from the host country officials as to what survival tools can one carry with on all times without any restriction. HAVE BODY INTELLIGENCE Elbows and knees are two of the strongest bones in your body. Build it strong. You can literally take on anyone, no matter how strong a person may actually look. Combat is more a game of the mind. Just in case you have to fight, act accordingly. Maximize these two weapons utility and hit hard on the ribs, neck, and nose. Get basic training in Muay-Thai, an awesome self-defence and attack system. READ BODY LANGUAGE Look for the triangle at the corner of a person’s eye, if it shrinks while talking; understand that the person is lying. Persons with crooked fingers should be safely avoided.

  3. TURN YOUR GPS ON Make sure you always keep your GPS on while you travel. Social networking platforms though are big distractions; at times they are also very useful. Keeping updates on Facebook and WhatsApp of your location will help your friends know your coordinates. Also while boarding a private taxi always make sure that you take a picture of the car’s number and text it to your friends on WhatsApp. GET A COMPASS Keep a hard copy of the city map and a compass (or a chronometer). This way you will have a rough idea of the direction you are in while travelling around the city. Moreover, you may also keep a record of travel time between prominent destinations to avoid getting confused. REMEMBER THE EXIT POINTS Get the locations of police stations and hospitals straight into your head. In times of crisis situation always move towards that direction. You are sure to be relieved of your troubles. Moreover, try different routes in the city during off college hours. In fact, it is also advisable not to take the same route every single day or withdrawing cash from the same ATM on regular basis.
