  1. ‘No story without struggle’ Sam Wray

  2. The track Sam Wray released his new single ‘No Story Without Struggle’ in 2020. Over the past year he has gained 4,304 streams on Spotify and currently has 1,384 monthly listeners. These are promising numbers seeing that he is an unknown artist. Sam Wray based the track, ‘No Story Without Struggle’ on going out, living his our best life without regrets and telling his listeners that everyone makes mistakes in life and that it is ok to. He explains to the audience that there is ‘No Story Without Struggle’ meaning that every story has some form of struggle. This track appealed to me as I found it catchy to listen to as well as being flooded with lots of ideas of visual cues.

  3. The meaning • The tittle of the song, ‘No Story Without Struggle’ has great relevance to the song due to the fact that he sings his heart out about a story being a metaphor for his life and that by having struggle makes the story dynamic. Ie. In life everyone messes up, it is not smooth sailing. • The lyrics ‘take your time, that’s all that matters most’ highlights that in life you have to take your time, to be able to do things right. This is an effective line as it makes the listener think of all that matters most to them and they feel connected to the song. • The lyrics ‘go out and see the world boy, go out and makes those mistakes’ demonstrates that it is ok to make mistakes in life and you have to make mistakes to be able to learn from them. This is an effective line as it also tells the listener it is ok to make mistakes in life as long as you learn from them. • The lyrics ‘and some days you will feel so very lost’ signifies to the listeners that everyone can feel lost and you will do at some point in your life but you will find your ground soon. This is effective as the listeners can relate to others who also listen to this song who sometimes feel lost and not knowing what to do with life. • From these four examples, I believe that the lyrics in the song our meaningful and allows the listeners to connect with the song and other listeners of ‘No Story Without Struggle’

  4. The genre • The genre of Sam Wrays song, ‘No Story Without Struggle’ is pop! • Pop is a very popular genre for music that originated in its modern form during 1950’s in the United Kingdom and the United States. • Pop music is usually electric, often borrowing elements from urban, dance, rock, Latin, country and other styles. • Songs of the pop genre are typically short to medium length with repeated choruses, melodic tunes and hooks. • The pop music has grown into it’s own ever-evolving genre. Some believe the pop music genre to be shallow, with simple songs about nothing more than partying, drinking and se. However, the genre has always been so much more, it’s the melting pot of music, a place where sounds of all sorts have been landed together, connected by the melody and structure of traditional pop. It’s electric sound has not shied away from tackling topics like love, lots and live. The emotions that sit at the heart of every kind of music. • Pop has been influenced with hip hop and R&B sounds. • To this day pop is a genre with endless roads for artists to travel down.

  5. The idea • The idea I have for the music video for Sam Wrays song, ‘No Story Without Struggle’ is to have it set in a lit up basement filled with instruments (drums, bass guitar, electric guitar, Elric piano etc… ) I would have the lead singer at the front with the drummer, guitarist, pianist all behind him. I would want to present it as a group of teenage boys coming together as a band practicing their music they produce. Alongside this I would also like to involve flashbacks of them all together – their memories of them making mistakes, having fun, on nights out etc… I would want the flashbacks to be them when they were younger to where they are now.

  6. Visual cues

  7. Influences • I was mostly inspired by last years music video, ‘City Never Sleeps’ I thought this music video was really well planned out and there was lots to work with. Seeing this music video inspired me to want to do a band as it was more visually interesting to watch

  8. The cast • we will need to cast a lead singer alongside a drummer, two guitarists and a pianist. For the scenes when they are younger we will need four young boys who look similar to them. • I would want the lead singer to be a teenage male, to be able to match the sound of voice Sam Wray has. I can imagine the lead singer being a skater boy with baggy clothing (white joggers and white baggy T-shirt) alongside a blonde mullet. I would try select someone with an ectomorph built. • I can imagine two male guitarist with a ectomorph built. One having curly long brown hair and another with straight blonde hair. I would also have these two in black leather jackets along with black baggy jeans and a white tank top. • Ideally I’d want the male drummer wearing an old vintage hat backwards along with joggers and a tight black shoulder top. I can imagine the drummer having black dreads and mesomorph built. • For the pianist, I’d have him wear a white tank top with a black oversized blazer with black baggy smart trousers. I’d would like to choose someone with an ectomorph built. • For the five young boys, I’d have them have a selection of clothes. Ie. Shorts for the summer flashbacks and memories and also joggers and scarfs and hats to connote the cold in winter. I’d have two boys with blonde hair, two with brown and one with black all with an ectomorph built.

  9. Performance base music video: • Instruments needed: bass guitar, electric guitar, pianist, drum kit, a microphone alongside a microphone stand. • Performed in a basement. • Music sheets around the room. • Outdoor string lights around the room. • Big brown vintage Sofa along with a vintage sofa chair. • Ideally want it to look like a normal basement which has been made into a cheap band room where the boys can practise without annoying their parents.

  10. Narrative base music video: • I would want there to be loads of flashbacks to times where each one of them have messed up. Ie. Waking up in a random girls bed, wetting their pants as a kid, getting a bad grade back from school . Funny relatable memories to keep the audience engaged and laughing along and knowing it is ok to mess up as everyone does. • I would like the memories to go back and forth to when they were little and now when they are older, so we see a clear mix of both. • I would also like to see the band performing in the mix of the video as well. • I do like a narrative base music video however, I imagine that for this song it would be more performance base.

  11. The style The style I’d go for, for this music video would be a vintage, edgy, skater boy kind of vibe.

  12. The structure • Verse • Chorus • Verse • Chorus • Bridge • Chorus • Outro
