The copy that I’m review was published in 2001 and it is the 7th edition of this title. However there is an 8th edition to this title that was published in 2007. According to the information I could find on WorldCat it states the 8th is completely revised and updated. That same notation is also listed on the front of the 2001 edition.

Authority l.jpg
Authority

There was an excellent review of this edition by Valerie Easton, Valerie in Horticulture Jan/Feb2002, Vol. 99, Issue 1.

  • “Editor Brenzel describes her year-and-a-half task of revision as a little like conducting an orchestra. Her core staff of ten worked with experts all over the West, including extension agents, nursery owners, growers, and climatologists.

  • If there is one item common to every western gardener's bookshelf, it is this book, a classic since it was first introduced in the 1930s, and a template for the best in regional reference books. The heart of the book remains the plant encyclopedia, with 8,000 listings, thousands of them new.”

Personal impression l.jpg
Personal Impression

  • If you need one and only one gardening book this would be the one to have on your shelf.

  • The list of plants is impressive, but not overwhelming.

  • Practical tips and great list of resources.

  • All the color photos really help you get an idea of what the plant will look like in your yard.

Reference uses l.jpg
Reference Uses

  • I need to learn how to prune the trees in my yard.

    • There is a great pruning section the Practical Guide to Gardening section. It includes easy to understand instructions and nice color illustrations.

  • I’m doing a science report on different plants, but the teacher says I have to include the botanical names.

    • All the plants listed in this book have their botanical names included.
