  3. Southern Regional Educational Board The Southern Regional Education Board works with those who are seeking to improve education from prekindergarten through graduate programs. SREB’s programs and services can be described in four categories: • compiles and disseminates information provided by states; • coordination of shared state resources; • demonstration programs – leading by example; and • SREB-sponsored meetings.

Program Goal and Objectives • GOAL • To increase the number of minorities who earn Ph.D.s and who seek to become faculty members • PROGRAM OBJECTIVES • Long term state and university participation • Comprehensive package of support • Effective teaching, mentoring, research • Collaborate with other state, regional, and national programs • Evaluate practices and disseminate results

Regional Services “More Than a Check And a Handshake” • Financial support long-term • Regular contact/follow-up • Professional development • Mentoring • Networking/community building • Advocacy and counseling • Career counseling • Institute on Teaching and Mentoring • Preparation for the professoriate

  6. Program Components • Doctoral Scholars Award (Five years) • Dissertation Year Fellowship (One year) • Compact for Faculty Diversity Institute on Teaching and Mentoring • Professional Development Matching Fund

  7. Doctoral Scholars Award • Five years support • Tuition and fee waiver (In and Out-of-State) • Three years support--$ 15,000/yr • Two-years of institutional support (TA/RA, Fellowship, etc.) • Annual Institute on Teaching and Mentoring • Regional Program services

  8. Dissertation Year Fellowship • One year of support • $15,000 living stipend • $500 research allowance • Annual Institute on Teaching and Mentoring • Regional Program Services
