  1. Co-Chairs Lars-Anders Breivik & Pablo Clemente-Colón Applied Science & ResearchStanding CommitteeNew actions from IICWG-VIII

  2. Points of discussion, science session • SAR data access; • The goal is to make SAR data access for operational ice services similar to met-satellite data access for met. services. • In Europe: GMES core service • Data assimilation, action 8.1 • New SAR data (L and X), action 8.2 • GCOS-sea ice, action 8.3 • Ice bergs in high sea ice concentration , action 8.4

  3. Applied Science and Research IICWG-7 Action Items SC6.2: Re-identify ice service/national Science representatives for all member nations. For those services which do not have Science sections, Heads of Ice Service will be contacted to propose appropriate national representatives as a contact Responsible: Science Committee Co-Chairs Target Date(s): December 2006 Status: Open

  4. National representatives Canada: Roger DeAbreu Denmark: Leif Toudal Pedersen Finland: Jari Haapala Germany: Iceland: Ingibjörg Jónsdóttir Japan: Norway: Lars-Anders Breivik Russia: Sweden: USA: Pablo Clemente-Colón Lithuania: UK: John Stark (?) Australia: Tony Worby WCRP / CliC: (Tony Worby will make contact)

  5. SC6.7: Each national member requested to give a brief summary of Top Research priorities and plans to facilitate identification of complementary &/or common activities and areas for collaboration. An updated list will be put on the IICWG web page Responsible: Science Committee Co-Chairs (Breivik) Target Date(s): December 2006 Status: Each representative will present research issues and priorities at the beginning of each science committee meeting Closed Applied Science and Research IICWG-7 Action Items

  6. Applied Science and Research IICWG-7 Action Items SC6.8: Develop a process for rotation of Committee Co-Chairs. Flett stepping down as Co-Chair for IICWG-7. Clements-Colon step in. Suggested procedure: Rotation with a change every 2. meeting (3 years ?) Co-Chairs from Canada/USA and Europe(+) Overlap in rotation Responsible: All Target Date(s): IICWG-8 Status: Closed

  7. Applied Science and Research IICWG-8 Action Items SC8.1: IICWG, IPY data assimilation and modelling project: Follow up the workshop on ice modelling and data assimilation, May 2006 Second workshop to be held at DMI (optional) fall 2008 Coordinator: Breivik, Carrieres, Kliem (DMI) Target Date: Fall 2008 Status: Open

  8. Applied Science and Research IICWG-8 Action Items SC8.2: Coordinate a project to collect and share multi frequency (L- and X- band …) and multi polarization data sets for research activities and validation. Work with other groups on this issue. Consider opportunities for external funding. Report on these activities Goal: to advice IICWG on the potential of new SAR data Coordinator: Dean Flett & Roger De Abreu Target Date: Next meeting Status: Open

  9. Applied Science and Research IICWG-8 Action Items SC8.3: Follow up GCOS activities on climate consistent sea ice analysis and time series. The activity was started by S. Andersen. Need to define the follow up work and possible funding sources Help identifying a GCOS sea ice chair Help identify funding to continue the intercomparison work. Coordinator: Toudal Target Date: February 2008 Status: Open

  10. Applied Science and Research IICWG-8 Action Items SC8.4: Investigate the issues and current understanding of satellite detection of ice bergs within high sea ice concentration. Coordinator: Clemente-Colón Target Date: February 2008 Status: Open
