Radiotherapy is the use of radiation, particularly X-rays for diagnosis and treatment of diseases. The other sources of radiation are gamma rays and protons. Radiotherapy is of two types namely external beam radiotherapy and internal beam radiotherapy. External radiotherapy utilizes X-rays generated from linear accelerators while internal radiotherapy is conducted by administering a radioactive material inside or close to the tumor inside the patient’s body. Radiotherapy is based on the principle of destruction of cancerous cells by damaging their DNA within these cells by radiations. Radiotherapy slows the growth of cancerous cells and is aimed at providing palliative care to relieve the patient of symptoms.
