  1. Literary Analysis Essay Created by Essay-Academy.com

  2. The Structure Of A Literary Analysis Essay 1. An introduction. It is the first part of a literary analysis essay where you give some general information according to your theme. 2. A body of the paper. It is the second part of your essay which is a fundamental analysis of the text where you give some arguments and examples. 3. A conclusion. It is the third part of your essay where you have to summarize everything.

  3. Recommendations For Writing A Literary Analysis Essay Compose a creative title for your literary analysis essay. It means that your title involves not only the name of literary work, its author and the words “the analysis of …” (e.g. “The Analysis Of The Fairy Story By George Orwell “Animal Farm””), but also some key words to attract the reader’s attention (e.g. “The Fairy Story “Animal Farm” By George Orwell: The Author’s Protest Against The Totalitarian System”).

  4. 2. Don’t retell the literary work! You have to explain the author’s ideas (in the way how you understand it), but not rewrite the plot.

  5. 3. Use some direct quotations to support your own thoughts about the literary work. However, avoid oversaturation your literary analysis essay with citing (especially with too long citations). Your quotations must be short, bright and to the point.

  6. 4. Involve the reader in your own essay. You may ask some questions to the potential reader or suppose the thoughts and impressions of other people.

  7. 5. You may also read some critical literature on your theme and compare your own ideas with statements of other critics.

  8. Questions That Can Help You with Analyzing a Play 1. Who is the protagonist and who is the antagonist? Describe them. Is the protagonist absolutely positive? If your answer is “Not”, think about the next question: what are his / her bad character traits? Is the antagonist absolutely negative? If your answer is “Not”, think about the next question: what are his / her good character traits? 2. Write the theme and main ideas. 3. Is it a mental or physical action? How many acts and characters are in the play? 4. Describe the language of the play (if it is not a translation).

  9. Questions That Can Help You with Analyzing a Novel 1. The same as in analyzing a play: Who is the protagonist and who is the antagonist? Describe them. Is the protagonist absolutely positive? If your answer is “Not”, think about the next question: what are his / her bad character traits? Is the antagonist absolutely negative? If your answer is “Not”, think about the next question: what are his / her good character traits? 2. Write the theme and main ideas. 3. Describe the narrative manner. 4. Describe the language of the novel (if it is not a translation).

  10. Questions That Can Help You with Analyzing a Poem 1. Who is the speaker (or who is the voice)? 2. Write the theme and main ideas. 3. Describe the form of the poem, its rhythm. 4. Describe the language of the poem (if it is not a translation). Are there some figures of speech (metaphor, hyperbole, simile, personification, metonymy and so on)? Write the examples of them.

  11. Remember that these three lists of questions are not complete. You may compose your own questions to write a literary analysis essay!
