  1. Buying Your First Flatbed Trailer

If you are only just getting in to shipping freight or moving around cargo, whether it is for personal or business reasons, one of the trailers that you might find yourself needing is a flatbed trailer. The requirement for a flatbed trailer will typically be the kind of scenario where you have to tow an extremely heavy amount of bulky, difficult to handle weight. You’ll see a lot of flatbed trailers doing commercial or industrial jobs, shipping around construction materials and machinery.

  3. However, there are a few different types of flatbed trailers, and a few different things that you should know before you purchase one. You really want to have a clear idea of exactly what it is that you’ll be using your flatbed for, and what you expect to get out of it, and the best way to keep everything safe and secure while you are using it.

  5. Which Type of Flatbed is the Right Choice? • One common theme uniting all the different types of flatbeds is how open your options for loading are. Due to their shape and the fact that there are no restrictions on the sides or above, you will have a lot of space to play around with. • However, despite how versatile they already are, there are still a few variances of flatbed trailers to suit specific situations.

  6. Step Deck Flatbed • One of the first varieties of flatbed is the Step Deck flatbed. Even though you already have a decent height limit of almost 9ft on average with a standard flatbed, in the scenario that you actually require just a little bit more height, the Step Deck will have you covered with a maximum load height of around 10ft. This is accomplished by having the loading deck be slightly lower, which is why it’s also known as a drop deck.

  7. Extendable Flatbeds • Similarly to the Step Deck, there are also Extendable flatbeds, which as their name suggests will allow you to accommodate a far longer load than normal. An Extendable flatbed can reach lengths of almost twice its standard counterparts, making it invaluable for transporting anything that may not quite fit on a standard flatbed.

  8. There are also “double” variances of both of the previous mentioned trailers. These flatbeds make use of specific designs and layouts to successfully manage to transport items that have excessively demanding length or height requirements.

  9. Removable Gooseneck Trailer • The other main type of flatbed is the Removable Gooseneck trailer, or the RGN. These are probably the most advanced type of flatbed that you could buy, and also by far the most versatile. It can tackle cargo sizes of similar heights thanks to the detachable parts of the trailer, and are incredibly useful for their ability to transport vehicles, which you can ride on to the trailer thanks to its ability to lower itself to the ground.

  10. Make an Informed Purchase • Depending on what your budget looks like, you’ll possibly be buying a flatbed that has been used before. If this is the case, then you should keep a list of things to check and questions to ask handy. • Some of the most important things to investigate and mention is the actual mechanical functionality of the trailer. You don’t want a trailer that is overly rusted or has faulty electronics, which will just cause you a headache later on down the road.

Make an Informed Purchase • One thing that can help with ensuring that the trailer is up to code and safe to use is checking to see if there are any papers or licensing for the trailer, depending on where you live. This will inform you about crucial information such as when the trailer was purchased. • Another important consideration is what the maximum load for the flatbed you have in mind is. This might seem like something that would be standardized or have similar weight limits, if you are new to buying a trailer, but the variance can be enormous. So, always ask when you are buying used, to have all the documentation or information available about the trailer, so you know it’s the right fit for you.

Stay Secured • Before you even consider moving anything with a trailer the size of a flatbed, ensure that you are well versed and have brushed up on all the safety precautions that must be taken to secure the load. This isn’t important only legally, but for the safety of your goods and for the rest of the people on the road that you may be endangering with improperly secured items.
