Factors Responsible For UPS Battery Failure | Ecsintl - Blog

To ensure maximum uptime, you must carry out a UPS battery replacement once the batteries reach their end of life. Generally, the UPS batteries last between three and five years, but several chemical, environmental, and user-related factors may greatly impact a battery's life. 1. Factors Responsible For UPS Battery Failure The main culprit behind major UPS malfunctions is battery failure. However, you do not have to be a victim of premature failure of batteries. In this post, we will discuss different factors responsible for UPS battery failure and how you can avoid it. The purpose of UPS (uninterruptible power supply) batteries is to keep IT equipment and computer systems operational through a constant flow of electricity. However, over time, the ability of these electrochemical devices to deliver and store power may slow down.

  2. To ensure maximum uptime, you must carry out a UPS battery replacement once the batteries reach their end of life. Generally, the UPS batteries last between three and five years, but several chemical, environmental, and user-related factors may greatly impact a battery's life. 3 Factors That Cause UPS Battery Failure There is hardly anything you can do to keep a battery from approaching its end of service. However, avoiding the below mistakes will surely increase the battery's lifespan. 1. Over-cycling During a power outage, a UPS system runs on battery power. As soon as the utility power is restored, the battery gets recharged for future use — this phenomenon is called the discharge cycle. Once the battery is installed, its rated capacity is 100%. However, after every discharge and recharge cycle, the battery capacity may slightly decrease. When you get to know that the battery is reaching the end of life, you should immediately replace it. 2. Poor Storage of Unused Batteries Even when the battery is not being used, its lifespan still decreases. This happens because small amounts of energy keep releasing from lead- acid batteries. It is suggested that you charge it after every three to four months of storage to extend the battery's storage life. Within a period of six months, you may witness a permanent loss of capacity if you do not

  3. charge at regular intervals. You can also prolong its life by keeping it at a temperature of 10°C (50°F) or below. 3. Incorrect Float Voltage Renowned battery manufacturers always mention the charging voltage for their cell design. Remember, the battery may cause severe damage if it is continuously charged beyond a certain limit. Low voltage or undercharging may form sulfate crystals on the battery plates, which could solidify and eventually decrease the battery capacity. On the other hand, high voltage or overcharging can generate excessive oxygen and hydrogen gases and cause internal dry out, further resulting in battery failure or even explosion or fire. UPS batteries are likely to fail due to several reasons. Hence, investing in preventive maintenance with a reliable UPS battery backup system would dramatically reduce the risk of potential disaster or system downtime.
