  3. Examples of Assistive Technology • Highlighter • Adapted paper • Headphones • Computer screen magnifier • Speech-to-text software • Computers

  4. Utilization of Assistive Technology • Communicate • Execute academic tasks • Travel from point A to point B • Reach materials • Engage in school activities

  5. Laws and Regulations • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) • Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act • Assistive Technology Act of 1998

  6. Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) • Restricts discrimination of individuals with disabilities. • Title IV zeros in on assistive technology.

  7. Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) • Guarantees children with disabilities to a free public education. • Schools are required to make proper changes to accommodate children with disabilities. • Last amended in 2004.

  8. Section 508 of theRehabilitation Act • Any technology created by the Federal government has to be made accessible to individuals with disabilities. • Software/hardware may be used to access.

  9. Assistive Technology Act of 1998 • AKA the “Tech Act.” • Provides funds for establishments to help with everything related to assistive technology, protection during the process of acquiring assistive technology, and help with financing assistive technology.

  10. Hearing Impaired Frequency-Modulated (FM) Amplification System This device uses radio waves to carry audio signals into hearing aids.

  11. Seeing Impaired Braille Express 150 This device produces Braille. It is capable of producing 150 characters per second.

  12. Learning Disabled Text Reader This device turns printed words into speech.

  13. Physically Disabled On Screen Keyboard This device allows people who have trouble typing on a keyboard, to type on the computer screen.
