  1. Won’t cleaning loosen my teeth!!!

  2. This is something I often hear from my patients, there is a strong misconception in people’s minds that professional dental cleaning or scaling will weaken their teeth. This is the exact opposite of what actually happens when you get a regular cleaning and polishing done every six months.  We at Dr Kandhari’s Skin and Dental clinic highly recommend a thorough oral prophylaxis every six months. What this does is removes stains, plaque and calculus from the tooth surfaces.

  3. Stains Are discolorations on the teeth which occur over time due to eating, drinking ect. Various hot and cold fluids like tea, coffee, aerated drinks and juices over time can cause yellowish and brown stains.

  4. Plaque  It is the soft white deposit that forms on tooth surfaces over a few hours after brushing. This is an accumulation of oral bacteria which secretes acids that can cause enamel loss thereby causing cavities and gum diseases.

  5. Calculus  When the above plaque is not removed, it mixes with the calcium in the saliva and forms a hard stony coating on the teeth. Over time this can separate the gums from the teeth surfaces thereby leading to severe gum disease and loss of natural teeth.

  6. Hence a regular cleaning makes sure all these deposits are removed from all the surfaces on the teeth and gums. This has several benefits like:  1. It reduces the bacterial load in the mouth, thereby ensuring the gums are healthy and well adapted to the teeth surfaces. This maintains the strength and integrity of the natural teeth.2. It ensures that oral bacteria does not enter the blood stream. This is very important for the cardiac health, especially for patients with artificial heart valves.

  7. 3. It prevents calculus deposits or pyorrhoea of teeth. This can cause severe gum disease and loss of natural attachment to teeth.  4. It prevents staining and discoloration of teeth over time. Thereby maintaining a clean healthy look. 5. Also a regular cleaning ensures a thorough checkup and examination of the teeth and soft tissues. This is a big advantage as it prevents worsening of dental decay and disease.

  8. So, to conclude I would strongly advise everyone to get a regular semiannual oral prophylaxis done. This ensures the overall heath and well being of the mouth in the long run.

  9. Thank You
