  2. Leaks, contamination, and structural failures are the three main problems of above groundwater tank systems. But, with recent innovations in tank design and construction, tank problems have become minimal. Still, experts and manufacturers recommend periodic inspections and testing to avoid such problems. Above ground water tank problems may vary by tank size, usage, and type. The challenge among inspectors is that damages to water tanks are often unpredictable. Problems only become visible when they are big enough to become noticeable. The key to maintaining long-lasting tanks is in addressing small issues immediately after detection. Testing and Inspections Materials used for water tanks have improved over the years; that’s why corrosion is no longer an issue with above ground water tanks. The first step to ensuring the performance of a water tank is to choose the best tank type. Municipal and private users can choose from fiberglass, concrete, and steel, which are all non- corrosive tank types. These types of tanks can last for decades without suffering major leaks and dilapidation, with proper maintenance. Manufacturers require periodic testing to uncover future problems. Even the slightest problems, such as a loose screw, can develop into major issues. In most cases, however, users only need to schedule testing and inspections every three to five years. For municipal use, the recommended material for tanks is steel, because it is extremely durable and is highly resistant to the elements.

  3. Security Security is another way to prevent future tank problems from developing. It is crucial to inform the public that municipal tanks are not a public space. People can harm the structure and contaminate the water. Animals can also contaminate the water with their feces. Inspection reports show that animal feces and dirt are the most common contaminants found in water tanks. To prevent animals from depositing their feces in the tanks and humans from vandalizing the structure, tank users should carefully cover the tank and secure the area with a wired fence. For municipal tanks, the community can secure the water tank with a round-the-clock security management. The costs for keeping the tank secure is minimal compared to major repair costs. Up until now, engineers are continuously exploring new technologies to improve the structural integrity of water tanks. The goal is to determine the best material that can withstand extreme weather conditions, such as hurricanes, and stand the test of time.
