  • 1500s - Leonardo da Vinci designs the first known scuba. His drawings of a self-contained underwater breathing apparatus appear in his Codex Atlanticus.

  • Charles Anthony Deane patented a "smoke helmet" for fire fighters. This helmet was used for diving, too!

  • Henry A. Fleuss developed the first workable, self-contained diving rig that used compressed oxygen.

  • Yves Le Prieur releases a very successful self-contained underwater breathing unit.

  • Louis Ce Corlieu patents the first swim fins in France and later in the US.
