  • 1500s - Leonardo da Vinci designs the first known scuba. His drawings of a self-contained underwater breathing apparatus appear in his Codex Atlanticus.

  • Charles Anthony Deane patented a "smoke helmet" for fire fighters. This helmet was used for diving, too!
