  1. History of SCUBA diving.

  2. 1500’s • 1500s - Leonardo da Vinci designs the first known scuba. His drawings of a self-contained underwater breathing apparatus appear in his Codex Atlanticus.

  3. 1823 • Charles Anthony Deane patented a "smoke helmet" for fire fighters. This helmet was used for diving, too!

  4. 1876 • Henry A. Fleuss developed the first workable, self-contained diving rig that used compressed oxygen.

  5. 1925 • Yves Le Prieur releases a very successful self-contained underwater breathing unit.

  6. 1933 • Louis Ce Corlieu patents the first swim fins in France and later in the US.

  7. 1941-1944 • 1941-1944 - During World War II, Italian divers used closed circuit scuba equipment to place explosives under British naval and merchant marine ships.

  8. 1946 • Jacque Cousteau's Aqua Lung was marketed commercially in France.

  9. 1956 • The first wetsuit was introduced by researchers at the University of California. Edco produces the first suits.

  10. 1956 • Ted Nixon introduces a distinctive red and white "diver down" flag to warn boaters to stay clear or slow down to avoid injuring nearby divers.

  11. 1959 • The YMCA develops the first national diver certification program.

  12. 1983 • Craig Barshinger and Carl Huggins, Jim Fulton, introduce The Edge, the first commercially successful American electronic dive computer.

  13. 2002 • The FBI issued a nationwide alert saying that it has received information about a possible terrorist threat from underwater divers.

  14. 2003 • Tanya Streeter, a world champion freediver, She descended 400 feet to capture the variable ballast record.

  15. 2005 • Scuba diving has become one of America's top growing sports. From open water to cave diving, scuba has become a pastime for all ages.
