  1. S6.1b Adaptation

  2. In a climate which is warm and humid like Singapore, what will be the most comfortable outfit you will choose to wear when you go out? Thick jackets? Long sleeve shirt and long pants? Short sleeved t-shirt and Bermudas?

  3. Singapore is warm throughout the year. • People here wear light clothing suitable for the warm climate. • What if we were to visit a place with ice and snow? Will we still choose to wear what we have chosen earlier on? Unlikely!

  4. Animals that live in cold are able to survive in the cold. • For example, when the polar bears from the cold Arctic come to live in the Singapore zoo, the zoo prepares large pools for the bears to swim in and cool off in. • There is also an air-conditioned den for the bears.

  5. Living things have characteristics that allow them to survive the living conditions in their habitat. • They try to ADAPT to their environment.

  6. Adaptations can be structural or behavioural. • Adaptations enhance the survival of organisms. When the body of the organism is specially suited to the organism’s environment, we say that the organism has a structural adaptation. When the organism behaves in certain ways in order to survive their living conditions, they are said to have behavioural adaptations.

  7. Example • Many species of birds that live in temperate regions migrate to warmer climates when the temperature drops in winter. • Their behaviour helps them to adapt to their environment. This is an example of behavioural adaptation.

  8. Example • Frogs have webbed feet that help them to swim. • When the body of an organism is specially suited to live in an environment, the organism is said to have structural adaptations.
