  2. In Florida, probate is a court process which addresses several issues regarding the finances and tangible assets of a person after they have died. The issues addressed include the following: • Identifying the assets of the deceased; • Paying the debts of the deceased; as well as • Distributing the remaining assets to a deceased person’s beneficiaries. www.doaneanddoane.com

  3. Steps Needed When Someone Dies with a Will First, one must make sure the deceased person’s will is valid. Ascertaining that the will fully complies with the law and that the decedent was mentally competent when signing the will is of major importance. Second, the attorneys at Doane & Doane will help to identify and inventory the assets of the deceased. Once those processes are accomplished, then a valuation of the assets must take place Understanding the value of the jewelry, art, properties owned, and general household goods is essential when probating a will. www.doaneanddoane.com

  4. Once the value of the estate has been determined, an assessment of the decedent’s debts and potential taxes owed must be prepared. Property not jointly owned or the subject of a trust can be used to pay the decedent’s debts. Once the debts are paid, the balance of the property is distributed to the heirs. Distributing property, as directed by the will, may be simple or complex, depending on the circumstances. www.doaneanddoane.com
