  1. Septic and Cistern Tanks Explained vWhen it comes to the storage of clean water and waste, you need proper tank systems to address the concern. Before you begin the installation of cistern or septic tank for clean water and waste storage, you may ask yourself – what’s the difference between these two? It is to note that there are significant differences between these two, which you should understand. However, every house/building requires proper cistern septic solution. Let’s talk more about these two in detail: Septic tank The word “septic” has originated from the Greek term for “rotten,” so it is used in reference with waste storage. In that sense, you can never assume putting anything of human consumption into a septic tank. These tanks are used for the purpose of holding waste. Septic tanks are designed to hold both gray water and black water – forms of human water waste. The waters are held underground. Gray water contains very little bacteria, but may contain some chemicals from cleaning products. This water is good for reusing. Black water, on the other hand, is wastewater filled with bacteria – that comes from toilets. Septic tanks are always filled, contain a product or bacteria to breakdown the waste. These tanks have to be filled during the installation only to ensure proper pressure management. For the uninitiated, cistern and septic tanks are two different entities, and the content they hold are very different in nature. Cistern tanks: These tanks are not for wastewater or sewage, rather these tanks are designed to hold clean, drinkable water for homes, businesses, or agricultural purposes. For their purpose, cistern tanks must be FDA approved. Cistern tanks are also designed to be filled, drained, and refilled. It differentiates them from septic tanks which should always be filled. Cistern tanks can also be used to hold rainwater. Cisterns for water can be made of concrete or plastic. Concrete ones offer a sturdier solution as you can even drive on top of them. Now you know the clear differences between cistern and septic tanks. They have their own purposes. Cistern tanks are for consumable water whereas septic tanks are used for the storage of wastewater. It is important to know the differences between these two, to avoid a swath of plumbing problems. Installation, management and handling of cistern and septic tanks should be done by a professional only. Call them for tank installation, septic drain field replacement, management and inspection.
