Who is responsible officer? • The responsible officer (RO) is the individual who organizes and manages appraisal activities and revalidation. • He/ She is a senior doctor working within the designated body (healthcare organization). • The function of the Responsible officer GMC has been described in the Medical Professional Regulation 2010.

  3. What does responsible officer do? • The Responsible officer is responsible for making recommendations to the GMC regarding the doctor’s license to practice. • In most of the cases, the medical director of the healthcare organization and institute. • The recommendation of responsible officer GMC are based on the information gathered through annual appraisal along with other information that available through the clinical governance system.

The role of responsible officer • The primary role of responsible officer is to ensure that the system of his/her organization provide support to the doctors for delivering the quality patient care. • They strive to constantly improve the healthcare delivery system. • If doctors falls below the set medical standards, the responsible officer GMC requires to take suitable actions to ensure the safety of patients by helping the doctors to meet the medical standards.

The role of responsible officer • The RO is answerable to the GMC. • RO nominates or appoints the organization to ensure that there are proper systems in place for the collection and retaining of information that is used for assessment of fitness to practice. • The RO also ensure that there is a robust appraisal system in place to support the doctors in their medical practice.

The role of responsible officer • The responsible officer GMC are required to ensure the following; • They are required to maintain the doctor’s list for which they are responsible. • They should maintain an integrated support system to monitor the performance of doctors, recognition of good medical practice while encouraging and assisting career as well as personal development and learning. • To ensure that the effective appraisal system is in place. • To take suitable actions to identify and address the weak areas of medical practice.
