  1. ASSISTIVETECHNOLOGY WHAT IS IT AND WHO USES IT? BY DELITA CLEMENTS SPRING 2015

  2. any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a child with a disability. And, really, what that says to us, it’s any tool. It’s a thing that makes a difference for a child with a disability in doing some kind of a functional task

  3. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA ’04) defines an assistive technology device as “any item, piece of equipment, or product system, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a child and specifically excludes a medical device that is surgically implanted or the replacement of such device” (e.g., a cochlear implant). Assistive technology, therefore, might be something as complex as a hand-held electronic magnifying instrument or as simple as a specialized rubber pencil grip. (Authority: 20 U.S.C 1401(1) or IDEA Amendments of 2004. P.L. 108-446, 20 U.S.C. S 1400 et seq., 300.5)

  4. AND THE LAW SAYS : That assistive technology must be considered for any child with an IEP, and they must have access to the assistive technology if they need it in order to receive a free appropriate public education.

  5. What does that mean exactly? If a child cannot access the general ed curriculum or the curriculum that they’re supposed to be using, and that is their free appropriate public education, then they may need assistive technology. If they need assistive technology in order to receive a free appropriate public education then the school system must provide it.

  6. TECHNOLOGY USED TODAY FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE HEARING IMPARIED A cochlear (koe-klee-er) implant is a device that provides direct electrical stimulation to the auditory (hearing) nerve in the inner ear. Children and adults with a severe to profound hearing loss who cannot be helped with hearing aids may be helped with cochlear implants

  7. MEET MY STUDENT BROOKLYN BLAKELY

  8. THIS VIDEO WAS MADE BY BROOKLYN AND A CLASSMATE ON HER COCHLEAR IMPLANTS I WANTED TO INCLUDE HER PERSPECTIVE ON HOW SHE GETS THROUGH LIFE WITH THEM.

  9. ENHANCED VISION CC TECHNOLOGY USED FOR SIGHT IMPARIED CCTV

  10. A talking calculator has a built-in speech synthesizer that reads aloud each number, symbol, or operation key a user presses; it also vocalizes the answer to the problem. This auditory feedback may help a student check the accuracy of the keys he presses and verify the answer before he transfers it to paper. LEARNING DISABLED

  11. A headband fitted with sensors detects electrical signals from facial muscles, eye movements, and brainwaves. The Brainfingers software converts these signals into computer controls or “Brainfingers.” You simply tense and relax muscles, or track an eye movement glance, to select. The Controls are tailored to the individual’s needs and can be activated by the tiniest movement.  PHYSICALLY DISABLED
