Using a shared definition makes discussion more productive, so to begin, this week we define what is meant by critical thinking. Sometimes, the word critical means being picky. It can also mean that something is important, as in “that is a critical part of this machine.” However, neither of those definitions reflects the meaning of critical as it is used in the phrase critical thinking. Respond to at least two of the following sets of questions with a minimum of 175 words:

Because critical thinking may be more rigorous than "everyday" thinking, it is important to recognize some factors that can influence the effectiveness of critical thinking, including reason, communication, and emotion. Provide an example of a situation where emotion influenced your decision-making. Did you feel the decision you made was a reasonable one? What role did emotion play in this example? Which ones influence you in negative ways? How can you build emotional fitness and psychological strength (as mentioned in the “Emotional Involvement in Critical Thinking” to make good decisions?

This week, you learn about bias, fallacy, assumption, and ambiguous communication. These elements often come into play when someone tries to convince someone else to agree with them. Recall a time when you wanted to get someone to agree with you. Did you support your beliefs with facts? Did you perhaps leave out key details, bring in unrelated ideas, or become overly emotional to make your case?

These examples can be from social media, from work situations, or other instances. Identify where bias, fallacy, or assumption is used in the argument. How do errors in thinking relate to fallacies?What are two fallacies you have personally encountered?   7. Every day we are a party to arguments. This is another instance where defining our words is important. When we talk about critical thinking, the "arguments" we refer to are not the conflicts or squabbles we have with others in our daily interactions. In our discussion of critical thinking, arguments are the acts of persuading others about the value of an action or point of view. Whether we are trying to convince someone else or they want us to agree with them, this exchange, or argument, is a place where the use of critical thinking is beneficial. Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words: · How do inductive and deductive arguments differ? To what extent do you use logic in general conversation? Give an example of how the use of logic and structure could affect some of your personal relationships or communications. · What are your thoughts about active disagreement and the use of evidence in arguments (as discussed in the two videos provided from the University Library)? ==============================================

The discussions this week have been practical, productive, and possibly life-changing! We started the course reflecting on how we formulate opinions and beliefs. We then expanded the concept of critical thinking to include consideration of how we relate to friends, family, and other personal situations. This week we look at a broader scope of relationships and communication and the role of critical thinking in those areas. Respond to at least two of the following sets of questions in a minimum of 175 words:

How can you apply what you have learned in this class to the information you encounter on social media? · How might your use of critical thinking affect other social interactions, such as those related to politics and being a consumer? Do you really analyze what you hear, view, or read on media outlets, or do you passively take it as truth? In what ways does critical thinking come into play with media? · Why do you think evaluation is one of the six skills of critical thinking discussed in the “Components of Critical Thinking” video segment? Is evaluation a skill that you feel you use on a regular basis or is it a skill that you need to work on more? ==============================================
