5 of the Best Antivirus Programs Around

These free apps aren’t as robust as the aforementioned Norton and McAfee, since they often can only thwart viruses and no other type of malware. That said, they are very good at what they do; my laptop and its laptop components can attest to that. Here are five of the best free antivirus programs right now.

  2. Here are five of the best free antivirus programs right now.  1.Lavasoft Ad-Aware Free Antivirus+ A positive aspect of Lavasoft • Main menu is easy to work around. • Use sliders to turn them on or off, • Its scan button is prominently displayed as a big, eye-catching “Scan Now!” button. It takes Lavasoft upwards of 20 minutes to do a full scan of a 500 GB hard drive. It also consumes as much as 32 MB of RAM when left running idly. Still, it does post a score of 99% in identifying recent viruses. The only technical drawback is that for 0-day viruses, its success rate significantly drops down to 80%.

  3. 2. Avast! Avast!’s interface is rather minimalist; and that’s a good thing. There is a lot of white space on its dashboard, showing only the information that users really need, and giving the program a clean, modern look. Tests conclude that Avast! takes only 15 minutes to do a full scan and consumes only 3.5 MB of RAM when running in the background. It scores 98% in virus detection, which is about the average for current antivirus apps, and enough to keep your computer’s desktop or laptop components  safe.

  4. 3. AVG AVG was the reigning champ of such software, giving even top-caliber (and expensive) brands like Norton, Kaspersky, and McAfee a run for their money. AVG takes more or less 25 minutes to fully scan a 500 GB hard drive, garnering the worst result of all five programs listed in these two articles. It has a 96.5% virus detection rate, which is a figure lower than the current average of 98%. Its memory consumption while running in the background is a low 2.4 MB of RAM, though, making it one of the most efficient in terms of resource utilization.

  5. ……AVG AVG’s interface is also one of the better-looking ones. Its easy-to-navigate menus are all represented by icons to go with the menu names, and its “Scan Now” button is readily visible. The program does display a lot of ads for a full upgrade, though. And as if that weren’t enough, it also teases by showing critical advanced features which are all grayed out in the free version.

  6. 3. Avira Avira is widely regarded as the current best, and my computer’s laptop components will readily agree. It requires under 15 minutes to a 500 GB hard drive run, and it consumes just 1.8 MB of RAM when left idling in the background. These stats make Avira the fastest and most resource-efficient. To top it all off, it scores a 99.5% efficiency rate in catching viruses.

  7. 5. Microsoft Security Essentials It makes the interface free from unwanted ad clutter. On the other – and as its name implies – the program only offers the essentials and nothing more. No email protection, no anti-phishing, no mobile version, nada. It just scans, bams, and leaves with a “thank you ma’am.” Even then, it isn’t particularly effective compared to the others. Conducted tests bring it to about 93%-95% efficiency, and it hogs 6.8 MB of RAM during its idle time. On the whole, this is one program best left for those who really can’t stand ads. It’s relatively okay, but users can do better.
