Welcoming Aromas In Your Home

Most of us will agree that one of the first things that we notice when we enter someone else’s home, is the aroma, whether it be pleasant or not so pleasant. Doubtless we notice smells when we enter our own homes too, and a pleasing aroma can certainly influence the way you feel about your home, or someone else’s.

  1. Welcoming Aromas In Your Home

  2. What difference can an aromatic home make? If you’ve been invited to a neighbor’s home for a roast chicken dinner, then it’s a given that if this is what you smell when you first walk through the door, you’re taste buds will spring into action and you may even begin drooling! However,

  3. while the smell of cooking or baking is a wonderful aroma, it isn’t what you want to smell all day long; and doesn’t induce a sense of calm or happiness in quite the same way as some other fragrances. However, there can be no doubt that smells induce emotions, and that’s one of the primary reasons behind ensuring that our living spaces have welcoming aromas. How can you achieve an aromatically welcoming home? It’s rather simple, and can involve scented candles, oil burners or reed diffusers being strategically placed around your home. Even simpler perhaps, is to leave a bowl of ripe lemons in the middle of a room, or even lavender. If you have spent

  4. the day cleaning your home with natural ingredients like lemons, then this scent will linger for at least a few hours. Selecting the right fragrance for the right room: This can of course, be entirely subjective, and how strong each fragrance is, is up to you. But, in general, subtle scents work best, since you cannot be sure that your guests or other home dwellers like the same aromas as you, this will ensure that their nostrils aren’t overloaded with unpleasant smells.

  5. Kitchens are best complimented with food scents, such as fruits or herbs, and bathrooms (which let’s face it, can be the pongiest room in the house at times!), can really take strong fruity or zesty fragrances. Since your bedroom is usually a private place, you could simply choose whichever fragrance pleases you the most, but relaxing aromas such as lavender or orange flower which help to promote a sense of calm and relaxation, are great for unwinding and encouraging sleep.

  6. If you’re not normally a lover of fragrances, what should you choose? Avoiding strong, overpowering aromas is best if you usually aren’t a fan of strong perfumes or fragrances: scents with daisy, wildflowers or sunflowers are usually a safe bet. Of course, creating a home that welcomes visitors with a pleasing aroma need not be a priority, but it is certainly something to consider, particularly if you have pets in the home, the pong of which may not be detectable to you, but will surely be picked up by guests!
