Steps to be a Psychologist Although Psychology is a multifaceted discipline, in a very general sense, Psychology is the scientific study of human behaviour, mind, and its functions. Students undergo years of education and training to become licensed psychologists, typically involving the following steps: ➢Complete bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in psychology ➢ Earn a PhD or postdoc in psychology ➢ Obtain clinical experience to become a licensed practitioner ➢Complete additional state licensing requirements ➢Earn certifications for career promotion. Career in Psychology While most jobs in the field of psychology require students to complete a bachelor's degree at least, an associate degree allows individuals to check their potentiality in the field to decide whether it fits their skills and goals. Associate degrees are intended to provide students with basic psychological knowledge. Entry-level psychology degree holders can serve as psychiatric technician, rehabilitation specialist, trainer, counsellor etc. What Psychologists do? Psychologists are responsible for investigating human behaviour in order to determine its underlying issues and use this information to help patients deal with their problems. It is often a tender balancing act that requires psychologists to carry out a myriad of complementary tasks. Clinical psychologists often perform the following duties: ➢Conduct psychological evaluations of patients to diagnose clinical conditions.

  2. ➢ Conduct clinical interviews with patients to learn their background, history etc. ➢Generate treatment plans for patients, monitors their progress and regulate treatment procedures as necessary. ➢Conduct behavioural change programs for patients. ➢ Teach patients how to cope with problems. ➢ Develop psychological education programs, psychological research, and report on findings. ➢Remain well-informed of progressive knowledge and trends and help to contribute innovatively to the field. Career Directions in Psychology and Related Discipline: Psychologists can station their individual interest into different types of career paths. Career Choices in Psychology 1.Clinical and Counselling Psychologists: Psychologists in clinical and counselling work with patients having mental, behavioural, and emotional problems. The focus is on the evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental health issues or disorders; psychologists in this area work in private practice or in hospitals in general. ➢Child psychologists ➢Geropsychologists ➢Clinical forensic psychologists 2.Behavioural Psychologists: These psychologists use the assumption that human behaviour is learned through environmental influences and can be modified. Professionals working with patients in this subsection, generally work to understand and modify negative behaviours. ➢Behavioural health counsellors ➢Family therapists ➢Industrial-organizational psychologists
