  1. The Dilemma of Men’s Emotions Presented by http://schoolofresearch.org/ http://schoolofresearch.org/

  2. Background • Men have been raised and trained not to show emotions and to “hold themselves together”. • Popular sayings and attitudes include “Big boys don’t cry”, “men should learn not to be sensitive”,“men are carefree”. • Experts: repression of emotions by men may lead to health related issues and cause strains in relationships, violent attitudes and behaviors, and psychological maladjustment. http://schoolofresearch.org/

  3. Cultural expectations • Social attitudes dictate that men should uphold their egos and pride, roll up their sleeves, and go about their daily activities without demonstrating emotion. • Physiological make-up of men is oriented towards strength and emotional toughness; men should not breach this physiological make-up by expressing their emotions. • Some psychologists: the male hormone, testosterone, dampens men’s feelings and reduces the significance and relevance of men’s emotions. http://schoolofresearch.org/

  4. Cultural expectations • Others: men’s psychological structure makes them focus on solutions, compared to women’s main focus on the process • Male body is physiologically designed to shield expressions of emotional behaviors • Men’s demonstrations of emotion would involve a breach of this make-up and orientation in their bodies’ physiology. http://schoolofresearch.org/

  5. Cultural expectations • Behavior of men shielding their emotions relates to expectations in culture and environment. • All cultures coach the boy child to hide personal emotions and become independent and action-oriented. • Characters of the ideal man are engraved in cultural stereotypes and inculcated in movies, TV programs, and other media. http://schoolofresearch.org/

  6. Cultural expectations • Crying, fear, and weakness are a taboo for the male gender in most cultures • Accordingly, men usually swallow their emotions of fear and sadness and commonly express them as anger and violence, which are admirable “male emotions”. • Emotions of anger and aggression are seen as suitable for the male gender; they are usually admired among society members. • Men should shield fear, sadness, and anxiety, and instead embrace the “male” emotions to fit in society. http://schoolofresearch.org/

  7. The Costs • In reality, men experience similar emotions to women’s in their lives • Men hide such feelings, as opposed to not having them per se. • Due to shielding, most men suffer emotionally, causing the build-up of psychological and emotional tension. • Explains why violent reactions and extreme anger are common in men’s behaviors. • To avoid this tension, the expression of feelings is necessary among men. http://schoolofresearch.org/

  8. The Costs • Medical problems as a result of accumulated body tension • Difficulties in romantic relationships and commitment as they are unable to solve their emotional conflicts • Psychological disorders, such as nervousness and despair • Behavioral problems, such as violent reactions http://schoolofresearch.org/
