  2.  Thermal Overload Relays Contents: A. Basics & Standards B. Range & Selection

  3. Relays Basics of Thermal OLR Thermal Overload Relay Thermal overload relay is a protective device. It is designed to cut power if the motor draws too much current for an extended period of time. Thermal relays use a bimetallic strip to mechanically open the contacts. Bimetallic strips consist of two conjoined pieces of metal which expand at different rates when exposed to heat. This difference, forces the strip to bend when heated. This strip is attached to a contact by a spring. When excess heat generated due to overcurrent, it causes the strip to bend and pull the spring, hence contacts are pulled apart and circuit gets broken. When the strip is cooled it returns to its original shape. * Trip Classes 10A 10 20 30 Tripping time in Sec at 7.2 times of setting current (in cold state) 2 to 10 sec 4 to 10 sec 6 to 20 sec 9 to 30 sec Thermal OLR specification:  Full load current range  Control Voltage  Trip class*
