  1. In May 2017, scientists in Bangalore had found a new molecule named 6-Bio that can enhance the efficiency of our body’s housekeeping mechanism. This molecule augments the process of cleaning up toxic proteins, while preventing them from aggregating and killing the cells in the brain; thus reducing degeneration of brain cells, which is the main cause behind the Parkinson's disease. After all, the main reason behind Parkinson's is the aggregation of toxic proteins, due to the lack of or inefficient cleaning up of such proteins, resulting in death of brain cells. 6-Bio was thus seen as a potential drug, which was then taken to the next level by the team of scientists led by Ravi Manjithya from the MBGU department at Jawaharlal Nehru Center for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR). At present, Mysore based Biotech company named Vipragen Bioscience has teamed up with JNCASR to identify candidates for not only Parkinson's, but many other such similar neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s. The founder-chairman at Vipragen, S. Chandrashekaran said, “Using Manjithaya's process, JNSCAR has screened a large number of small molecule libraries and identified the novel neuro-protective pharmacological entities. Vipragen, being an integrated pre-clinical drug discovery and development company, will carry forward the drug candidates that are already proven for neuro-protection in preclinical animal models.” What does 6-Bio exactly do? 6-Bio acts as an autophagy modulator, meaning that it can restore autophagy, or the capability of the body to clean up toxic proteins; thus not permitting them to form clumps

  2. and kill brain cells. The speed at which autophagy or cleaning up of toxic proteins happens is known as the Basal Level of the process. The new molecule 6-Bio augments the efficiency of the autophagy process by enhancing this Basal Level by multiple number of times. Or, you can say that it quickens the process of the cells taking the bad proteins which may have formed clumps to the clean-room. The Managing Director at Vipragen, Chaitra Harsha, argued that neurodegenerative diseases are age-related, devastating, and life-threatening, which drastically downgrades the quality of life of the patients. She said, “We can use the proprietary platform to identify the new drug candidates for neurodegeneration.
