  4. The 1970s • Counterculture goes mainstream • Hippie values move to center (somewhat) • Rock as a commercial enterprise (big $$$) • FM Radio dominates broadcasting- A.O.R. becomes top-selling genre - programming becomes tightly scripted • AM Radio for edges- pre-teen pop and oldies stations

  5. “The Hippie Aesthetic”(Covach) • From dance music to concert/listening music • From singles to albums- album as a unified whole (concept)- album as a “trip” (quasi-drug experience) • Emphasis on the studio over the concert • Rock musician is an “artist”- creates sophisticated music- deals with “important” issues • Emphasis on and admiration for technical skill

  6. British Blues Bands • Continuation of earlier blues in Great Britain • Strong influence of Chicago Blues • Rolling Stones, Yardbirds and Cream • Add Psychedelia & other styles- Led Zepplin- Deep Purple- Black Sabbath (goth elements) • Heading toward “Heavy Metal”
