  1. Coaching Association of Canada NCI Sask

  2. What is it? A program of the Coaching Association of Canada, located at the site of 8 National Sport Centres (NSC) across the country. Offers an eight month, full-time and a two year part-time, coaching education diploma program in sports coaching. Eligibility • Level 3 certified in the NCCP program or International equivalent. • An NSF – approved candidate. • A minimum of three years experience coaching athletes, training in a year-round program. • An under graduate degree in physical education is recommended (but not required) Coaches Attending NCI (B.C.) 1986 -2003 TOTAL: 236

Full-time Program of Study • Winter session (August– April) • Practical coaching: Daily mentorship with master coaches. • Sport science modules of the diploma program, e.g. energy systems, mental preparation, etc. • Summer session (Optional but recommended) • Coaching placements with national or provincial level team. • Part-Time Program of Study (Two Year Program) • two year part-time program leading to diploma upon completion • sessions are held as a combination of weekends and weekdays • enables participants to maintain coaching responsibilities • program includes workshops / computer technology / distance education

NCI Required Content • Coaching effectiveness • Computer Applications • Coaching Effectiveness • Additional content may be required by each ndividual NCI or NSF • Completion of mentoring program with designated Master Coach • Completion of final oral presentation: Year Plan Integration • Energy Systems • Strength Training • Nutrition • Mental Training • Practical Coaching Sport Specific • Planning and Periodization • Long-Term athlete Development • Leadership

  5. N.C.I. Practicum (Mentorship) • Master coach observations and assessments of the apprentice (estimated 23-35 hours) • Completion by the master coach of a check list of observations of the apprentice’s training sessions, at least once per week. • Apprentice observations of the master coach. (estimated 25- 35 hours) • Regular tutorials with the master coach to cover the topics in the Practical Workbook. (estimated 24-35 hours) • Regular interviews with the master coach, apprentice coach, and N.C.I. Director and submission of Quarterly reports.

Commonwealth Sport Development • The National Coaching Institute Victoria campus has hosted the CSDP High Performance Coaches Scholarship Program since 1994 • In partnership with the Commonwealth Games Association of Canada and PacificSport, Canadian Sport Centre Victoria, providing scholarship support • 11coaches have graduated from the Full Time 8 months Diploma Program in Victoria • Caribbean Region • Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados , St Kitts/Nevis , St Lucia • African continent • Zimbabwe, Namibia , Malawi , Zambia, Sri Lanka

  7. International Olympic Committee and The National Coaching Institute of Canada • An approved Training Centre by the IOC, the NCI – Canada can provide a combined Diploma program in Sport Science and practical coaching. • National Olympic Committees may obtain scholarship support from the IOC Olympic Solidarity Program if their candidate is accepted by the NCI – Canada at any of the eight program sites across the country. Non scholarship candidates since 1996 • Egypt, New Zealand, Japan, China, Switzerland, India, Botswana, England, Zambia
