The Northern Railway Network

of Mozambique

  • The first section of railway in the region, between Lumbo and Monapo, was opened in 1914 and the final section connecting Cumba to Malawi was completed in 1970. The railroad was connected to the Port of Nacala in the late 1940´s to coincide with the opening of the port in 1951.
  • The railway line is fully operational and the section from Nacala to Cuamba (533 km) is presently in a very good condition. The remaining section from Cuamba to Malawi (77 km) requires some work.
  • The northern railway network in Mozambique, also, includes the line from Cuamba to Lichinga (262 km), which is in the process of being repaired.

The transit times to or from points in Malawi for these trains are on average 34 hours.

- Freight is also hauled to and from any of the stations on the CDN network.
