Background • Best practice documents for design, construction & maintenance of roads are in a state of obsolescence • Ascribed to loss/migration of skills from Public sector • Form the basis of sound engineering practice aimed to optimise provision & maintenance of our road network • Springboard for new entrants into the roads industry to benefit from decades of experience

  3. Incisive action In response Sabita increased its investment in technology development to: • ensure the sustainability of the road building industry • stem erosion of skills from road authorities • ensure a well informed bituminous products materials industry

  6. New Sabita Manuals • Manuals 25 (2006) • Quality in the transportation of bituminous binders • Manual 26 (2007) • Guidelines for the priming & stone precoating fluids • Manual 27 (2008) • Construction and design of TLA for low volume roads

  7. Proposed projects • Converting REACT (economic analysis of short term rehabilitation) program from DOS to Windows for TRH 12 • Guidelines for the performance of binder distributors • Guidelines for the use of RAP in HMA • Design & use of slurry seals • Sealing in winter
