Flexible, relevant, current … At James Watt College we understand that work-based trainers and coaches need access to current up-to-date qualifications that meet their individual needs and the needs of their employers. We have designed training programmes that offer a variety of routes to professionally recognised training qualifications.

Prospective trainers or coaches This route is suitable for anyone not currently working as a work-based trainer or coach, but who would like to develop the skills and knowledge to confidently apply for such positions either full-time or as part of another role in the workplace. Introduction to Learning and Development On completion of this unit you should be able to: • Undertake a basic training needs analysis for an organisation. • Select appropriate training options. • Plan prepare and deliver a short training session. • Provide feedback to learners. • Review effectiveness of training with learners.   7. What will I learn? This is a very practical unit which will teach you how to decide what kind of training is needed in a particular situation and choose how training should be delivered. You will also learn to plan a short training session and deliver it to a small group, providing feedback to learners and using feedback from learners to improve future sessions. Back to Route

  8. How long will it take? The length of time to complete the Introduction to Training and Development depends on the route taken: • If you choose to attend College • This will take 5 days full time, or 10 half days or evenings, plus additional study in your own time. • If you choose to study in your own time • This will take no more than 3 months. You will need to attend college for assessment purposes. Back to Route

  9. Do I have to attend classes? • You may attend classes at College, and these may take place over 5 days or 10 half days or evenings. You will be required to study at home, too. • If you are unable to attend College you may study at home, but must complete the course in 3 months and must attend College for assessment. What support do I get? • Whether you attend College or study at home you will receive: • Regular support from your Tutor, either face-to-face, via email or telephone. • Access to the College’s electronic learning environment. • Access to the College’s library and student support facilities.   12. New trainers and coaches You have some experience in training and coaching, whether or not this is a main part of your role. You may have attended ‘Train the Trainer’ sessions within your workplace or elsewhere but don’t have formal training qualifications. Introductory Route Click here

SVQ Learning and Development • Level 3 Learning and Development is suitable for people who are working as trainers. • Level 4 Learning and Development is suitable for people who are working in a training role, and supporting / managing training. • PDAs in Training, or Supporting Learning are available as shorter awards for people whose current job includes working with learners. What will I learn? • These awards are all based on the current National Occupational Standards for Learning and Development so will provide you with up-to-date knowledge and skills. • The level 3 award includes 11 units, including optional units which match your work role. • The level 4 award includes 12 units, including optional units which match your work role. • The PDA includes 4 units, including optional units which match your work role.   17. How long will it take? • The SVQ Level 3 Learning and Development will take between 12 and 24 months. • The SVQ Level 4 Learning and Development will take between 12 and 24 months. • The PDA will take between 3 and 6 months. Back to ‘Work-based Trainers’

  18. How is it delivered? The SVQs are work-based qualifications and you will not be required to attend college. You will be allocated an Assessor who will work with you to plan how you will gather evidence and how that evidence will be assessed. Back to ‘Work-based Trainers’

SVQ Level 4 Learning and Development If you have completed the SVQ Level 3 Learning and Development or the HNC Learning and Development and your job role is extended to include managing and co-ordinating training programmes you may be able to complete the Level 4 Learning and Development. Some of the units from the Level 3 may be credited to the Level 4. Your Assessor will be able to provide further advice. Back to ‘Work-based Trainers’

  23. HNC Learning and Development The HNC Learning and Development is suitable for new or existing trainers and coaches, and provides practical skills and up-to-date knowledge in key areas of training and development. Back to ‘What’s Next’ Back to Non Work-based Qualifications

What will I learn? • How to plan and develop your own skills • How to identify the training needs of individuals and organisations. • How to plan, design and delivery training, coaching and group learning. • How to use learning styles and learning theories. • How to assess and evaluate training. • How to support learners • If you have completed the Introduction to Learning and Development, this will count as 2 credits towards your HNC.   25. How long will it take? There are a number of options for this award: • Evening class attendance – one evening a week and supported self-study will take 18 months. • Day release – one day a week and supported self study will take 9 months. • Distance learning – will take no more than 18 months.   26. How is it delivered? We offer flexible options for delivery of the HNC Learning and Development. Classes during the day or during the evening are supplemented by support materials for self-study, available on our electronic campus – Blackboard. Alternatively, you may study for the HNC through Distance Learning, using support materials and Blackboard. You may be required to attend College for assessment purposes. Updating your Skills and Knowledge To help trainers keep up-to-date with skills and knowledge in training and development, James Watt College are continuously developing short Trainer Skills sessions. These can be delivered in-house (subject to numbers) or in College. They may also be available via distance learning using supported study and Blackboard. Go to Short Courses
