Important Dates November 30th • CSU and UC Applications DUE October 1st - March 2nd • Submit FAFSA or DREAM Application (Financial Aid) January 15, 2020 • For 4-year colleges, submit official SAT scores to colleges / universities through CollegeBoard account • For 4-year colleges, submit official ACT scores to colleges / universities through ACT.org account

Important Dates January 30, 2020 • For CSUs request transcripts with their Fall Grades to be sent to each campus they applied to February - April • Apply to community college: Harbor, Long Beach City, El Camino, Santa Monica City • Separate application for Honors Transfer Colleges May 1, 2020 • For 4-year colleges, confirm that they will attend that university in the Fall • To confirm enrollment, there may be a required deposit to the university and / or housing

  6. Free Application for Federal Student Aid: FAFSA or DREAM Application What is it? The FAFSA and DREAM are free application that help your student access grants, work study money, and / or loans that can help pay for college (2-year, 4-year, public, private, in CA, and out of CA). Which one? FAFSA: the student has a Social Security Number or a permanent resident number. DREAM: the student does not have a Social Security or permanent resident number. When? FAFSA Application and DREAM Application opens October 1,2019closes March 2, 2020 • https://fafsa.ed.gov/ • https://dream.csac.ca.gov/

FAFSA: Free Application for Federal Student Aid Makes it possible to get money to help pay for colleges in the U.S. FREE Money: • Cal Grant (CSU, UC, Private, and community colleges in CA) • BOG Fee Waivers (pays for first 2 years at community college in CA) • Pell grant (federal grant to pay for any college) Work Study • Money you earn working at a job on campus Loans • Money the student has to repay • You DO NOT have to accept loans

CA DREAM ACT Application Makes it possible to get money to help pay for colleges in California FREE Money: • Cal Grant (CSU, UC, Private, and community colleges in CA) • BOG Fee Waivers (pays for first 2 years at community college in CA) CA DREAM Act Loans • Money the student has to repay • You DO NOT have to accept loans

FAFSA & DREAM: Cal Grant Cal Grant = Free money to pay for UCs, CSUs, private schools, community college, some trade schools in California • Cal Grants are awarded based on student GPA (minimum 2.0 10-12) and household income and size (FAFSA or DREAM) • FAFSA or DREAM Application must be submitted by March 2 ,2020 in order for a student to be eligible for Cal Grant

  11. FAFSA & DREAM: College Promise FAFSA or DREAM Application must be submitted by March 2 ,2020 in order to qualify for Free Community College Tuition (2 year limit)

  12. Documents Needed to Complete FAFSA FSA ID(student and parent) Social Security Number or Alien Registration Information (student and parent) 2018Tax Returnor you may be able to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to import the parent’s 2018 tax information into the student’s FAFSA application

Scholarships • Scholarships from the university (merit and need based) • UC = Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan • Total family income of $80,000 or less • UC Scholarship Page • Cal State = State University Grant • Expected Family Contribution $4,000 or less and not receiving Cal Grant • CSU Scholarship Page • Spring Semester local scholarships for POLAHS students

  19. Help With College Applications • Senior English teachers will work on UC Insight Questions and Common App Personal Statements in class • CSU, UC, Common App workshops / support during English periods, lunch, afterschool, Free period, TA period

  20. CSUs & UC : Eligibility When your student applies to a CSU or UC they should: • Complete all a-g courses with a grade of C or higher by the June 2020 • CSUs -Have at least a 2.0 Academic 10-12 GPA UCs - Have at least a 3.0 Academic 10-12 GPA

  23. UCs : Insight Questions Student chooses 4 questions to respond to from a total list of 8 questions English teachers are working on them in class! 350 word limit, style does not matter List of UC Personal Insight Questions

  24. Common Application You can use the Common App to apply to selective colleges and universities across the United States and some international colleges. Check what schools accept the Common App here: • http://www.commonapp.org/search-colleges In creating an account, you can apply to multiple schools using saved information. You will need to select each school that you are interested in applying to for admission. • https://apply.commonapp.org/login Common Application Workshops in the College and Career Center

  25. Common App : Personal Statement Student chooses 1 question to respond to from a total list of 7 questions English teachers and I can provide feedback and support 650 word limit List of 2019 - 2020 Common App Personal Statement Prompts

  26. Common App : Supplemental Questions Additional questions for each university that the student plans to apply to English teachers and I can provide feedback and support Word limit varies (often 250) “Why do you want to attend this university?”

Common App / Private : Letters of Recommendation Not required by CSUs or UCs Counselor (Academic or myself) Often 1-2 academic core teachers (Math, English, Science, History, Language) Teacher will request a Brag Packet which is on the Google Classroom May have the option for “Other”: coach, work / intern supervisor, church leader

  28. Common App / Private : Additional Information Provided by Listed Counselor This listed counselor will provide the additional information for the student School Profile Student transcripts (beginning of fall semester, end of fall semester, and final spring grades) Mid-year report

CSUs & Private : Transcripts with Fall Grades CSUs: Student will request transcript to be sent through Parchment Common App: Listed counselor will send transcript through the system For private / Out of State universities using SENDedu or university application system: Listed counselor will send transcript through the system UCs: Do not require fall grades

  31. CSUs & UCs & Private / Out of State : SAT / ACT If your student plans on applying to a CSU or UC, they must take the SAT or ACT with writing / essay by December and send their scores by January 15th. SAT: October 5th, November 2nd, December 7st ACT: October 26th, December 14th

Community Colleges Your student can use CCC Apply to help you apply to individual community colleges across California. • http://home.cccapply.org/apply All California community colleges will have you complete the enrollment process: • Apply online • Orientation (online or in-person) • Counseling (some offer online) to create your Student Education Plan (select classes) • Register for classes We will have community college applications in the College and Career Center
