  4. Summary- own words • Two migrant workers, George and Lennie, travel in a friendly companionship along the Salinas River. They are not related; however, they are comfortable with each other. The reader learns that George is the father, leader figure and Lennie is mentally-retarded and very simple. He is obedient to everything George tells him to do. George makes it clear they are fleeing Weed because Lennie did something bad and starting fresh on a ranch. By the end of the chapter, they are approaching the new ranch. • This section’s purpose is to present the exposition: setting, background information and characterization (1-2).

  5. Setting • Soledad, Southern CA • 1930s • Thursday Evening • Summer evening; warm outside “A few miles south of Soledad, the Salinas River…in front of the low horizontal limb of a giant sycamore there is an ash pile made by many fires; the limb is worn smooth by men who have sat on it” (2).

  6. Characterization of main characters (include how they have developed over the plot of novel. Include inferences. • George: small, quick, dark of face, restless eyes, strong features, well defined body. Seems to be the leader of the companionship. • Lennie: George’s opposite; huge, shapeless, large pale eyes, sloping shoulders, drags feet, arms hang loosely “The first man’s [huge companion] dropped his blankets and flung himself down and drank from the surface of the green pool…” (3). “Lennie, who had been watching, imitated George exactly” (4).

New Vocabulary in Section 1 • Recumbent (adj): resting – describing George and Lennie by the river • Stilted (adj): stiffly- describing both men as they get up after resting • Brusquely (adv): abrupt, blunt manner- describing Lennie’s demeanor • Stake(n): A share or interest- describing their relationship and purpose for working

Significant Figurative Language • Foreshadow “Lennie- if you jus’ happen to get in trouble like you always done before, I want you to come right here an’ hide in the brush”(15). • Allusion- Physical settings “Gabilan mountains” (2). • Word Choice/Imagery- warm colors and weather to describe scenery and soft sounds of Nature • Dialect- bindle, knapsack, work cards, bus tickets to show migrant lifestyle and time period

  9. Archetypal Characters and Settings Settings • River-water is pure and cleaning; symbolic of baptism. Lennie and George are cleansed of their previous sins in Weed and reborn. • Clearing by the river- Garden of Eden; safety and peace. • Ranch- hard work and life’s possibilities. This is when the reader works hard in life to achieve their goals. • Wise Fool- Lennie; mentally inferior but able to speak the truth about others and reveal their weaknesses. • Average Man- George; this is the everyday man. Readers identify with him. • Mother Figure- Aunt Clara “Lady, huh? Don’t even remember who that lady was. That was your own Aunt Clara” (9). Characters

  10. Symbols Rabbits- symbolic of dreams “…about the rabbits in the cages and about the rain in the winter and the stove…” (14). Dream farm- symbolic of the American Dream

  11. Themes • Loneliness • Dreams vs. Reality • Friendship “Guys like us, that work on ranches, ae the loneliest guys in the world” (13).

  12. Significant Cross References • This can go BACK to chapter one or forward to chapter six. • Can include: character traits, settings, figurative language, themes, symbols, etc. • Include a minimum of THREE. In chapter two, ….. (3).

Slide Requirements • Follow the modeled ppt for order and required elements. • There is a minimum of NINE slides: title, setting, summary, characters, archetypes, symbols, theme, figurative language and cross references. • These required slides MAY be expanded to multiple slides if needed. • Each slide should have: 1 relatable picture, 1 embedded quotation, slide heading and transitions • Except for quotes, ALL information MUST be in your OWN words.

  14. Order of unit • You will FIRST read the section. That NIGHT, you will have time to go home and review the section individually for further understanding. • You will have a final essay, group project and BATA/Non-BATA assign for this unit ONLY.
