Urbanization • Overcrowded tenets – multi-family urban dwellings that were unsanitary • Lack of safe drinking water • Disease – cholera and typhoid fever • Mass transit - city struggled to repair old transit systems and build new ones to meet the demand of expanding population • Fires – limited water supply, volunteer firefighters, cities filled with wooden buildings • Crime – pickpockets, thieves, and lack of an organized police force

  3. Politics • Political machines – offered services to voters and businesses in exchange for financial or political support • Graft – illegal use of political influence for personal gain • Boss Tweed • Patronage – giving of government jobs to people who helped a candidate get elected

Immigration • Americanization movement – designed to assimilate people of all cultures into American culture • Nativism – favoritism towards native-born Americans • Chinese Exclusion Act – 1882, banned entry to all Chinese except for students, teachers, merchants, tourists, and government officials • Gentlemen’s Agreement – 1907-1908, limited immigration of unskilled workers to US from Japan • Melting pot – a mixture of people of different cultures and races who blended together by abandoning their native languages and customs • Discrimination

  5. Working Conditions • Children • No worker’s compensation • Long hours • Low pay • Dangerous machines • Ventilation/sanitation • Disease • Locked in rooms (fires)
