  1. Image Artifacts Bushong Ch. 17 & 31 Carter Ch. 7

  2. ARTIFACTS:AN UNWANTED DENSITYON THE FILM http://www.xray2000.co.uk/

  3. Artifacts • Any irregularity on an image that is not caused by proper shadowing of tissue by the primary x-ray beam. • Are undesirable optical densities or blemishes on a radiograph. • Can be very interesting at times. You become the detective, what caused that?

  4. Artifact Classification Screen Film

  5. Exposure Artifacts • Exposure artifacts are generally associated with the manner in which the radiographer conducts the examination • Incorrect screen-film match, poor screen-film contact, warped cassettes, improper positioning of the grid, Improper patient position, patient motion, double exposure, and incorrect radiographic technique • Largest area for repeat exposures

  6. ExposureArtifacts • Usually easy to detect And correct

  7. ExposureArtifacts

  8. PATIENT ARTIFACT - JEWERLY

  9. Pt clothing

  10. Double Exposure 2 exposures made on top of each other – exposure artifact

  11. Lack of contact between film and cassette can cause “blurring” of the image

  12. POOR SCREEN CONTACT

  13. Poorscreen contact

  14. Patient motion

  15. Double exposureChild

  16. Double exposure

  17. ? Hands over upper abdomen

  18. PATHOLOGY NOT ARTIFACT

  19. Dust in imaging plate can cause white marks on image – Both in film/screen and computed radiography

  20. E E G MONITOR

  21. cast

  22. What do you See? 2 exposures

  23. CR plate tube side down

  24. GRIDCut off

  25. Dirt on screen mimicking a foreign object.

  26. PROCESSING ARTIFACTS • Most often caused by pressure. Pressure artifacts increase OD • Scratches or scrapes remove emulsion appear as low OD • Roller Marks, Pi lines, Dirty rollers, Chemical fog

  27. Guide shoe marks Improperly placed Turnaround assembly

  28. Pi Lines scratches

  29. Scratch marks from improper handling.

  30. Scratch marks from rollers in automatic processor.

  31. Developer Spots

  32. Water spot

  33. Halo effect with Edge enhancement

  34. Handling & Storage Artifacts • Image fog – temperature, humidity, radiation, light • Pressure marks – film being stacked • Kink marks • Static • Hypo Retention

  35. Discolored film due to hypo (fixer) retention. Chemicals not washed off – over time will turn film brown

  36. Crimping /cresent mark

  37. Roller marks from film stuck – then pulled from processor

  38. Static electricity

  39. Name & causeof this?

  40. Light fog

  41. Kink mark or nail pressure mark

  42. Artifact Classification Digital – CR & DR

  43. Image Receptor Artifacts • Debris on image receptor in DR can be confused with foreign bodies

  44. Image Receptor Artifacts Line caused from dirt collected in a CR Reader

  45. IR Artifact - Digital • Pixel Failure = CR & DR plates should last for thousands of exposures. Interpolation can be used to fix defects in a small area. • Ghosting artifacts = exposure to environmental radiation or incomplete erasure.

  46. imaging plate was not fully erased before the chest examination was performed

  47. background radiation
