  1. Blog 01: Alignbrace.com Scoliosis: A Spinal Deformity Scoliosis is a spinal condition where the vertebrae of the spine are in curves. It may be curved in the C or S shape. The spinal deformities formed in the young age can cause a lot of pain and further lead to disabilities. The degree of scoliosis may range from mild to severe. In Singapore, it often occurs in children and based on severity the treatment is done. It's a curvature on the spine of the patient. The larger the curve the more chances of conditions getting worse. S-curve is more dangerous than C-curve. A curve located in the centre part of the spine gets worse as compared to curve in the lower and upper section. This is more prominent in females than males. Some of the common symptoms are: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Uneven hips Rotating spine Shortness of breath Back pains Neck pains Bump in the lower back The entire body leans to one side. Causes can be: · · · · · Birth related defect Due to cerebral palsy which affects nerves. Due to any spinal injury. Due to genetics. Leg length: If one leg is longer than other. Treatment for scoliosis: Most common type of scoliosis is idiopathic scoliosis where the condition is inherited and the reason for curve formation of spine is unknown. It commonly occurs in children and early treatment is required to reduce curves. The treatment may include casting where the patient is an infant, therefore, cast is made up of plaster of Paris to cure curves on spine. The most common scoliosis treatment in Singapore for children is bracing. Bracing provides necessary support to backbone so that the patient feels comfortable to carry out his daily routine activities. Different braces are available as per the condition and degree of scoliosis. Upper back and lower back braces are effective in reducing curve progression. The braces are made up of soft fabric which is lightweight as well as provides flexibility. In case of extreme conditions, surgery is the only option for scoliosis treatment in Singapore.
