  3. 10.4 million businesses are owned by women Women’s businesses have grown twice as fast as others 16% of the 500 largest companies are represented by women 3.25 million were owned by minorities in 1997 Minority owned business has increased 168% since 1987 Women Minorities

  4. The Glass Ceiling • Is an invisible barrier preventing women and minorities from advancing in business

  5. Glass Ceiling • 78% of female minorities felt that discrimination effected their hiring and pay

  6. Entrepreneurship • An Entrepreneur is someone who starts and runs their own business • At first they are in charge of many of the management functions

  7. Entrepreneurship • The risk is high for anyone who starts a business • You may lose all of your investment • There are a lot of rewards for a successful business owner

  8. Entrepreneurship • People who are entrepreneurs tend to have a less formal education • They tend to jump from job to job before they start a business • They also tend to be more independent

  9. Entrepreneurship • Be your own boss • Tend to work long hours in order to make sure their product succeeds • They have a great satisfaction with their work • Create their own ideas and market them

  10. Three Types of Ownership • Types of ownership • Sole proprietorship: people who run their businesses single handedly • Partnership: one or more partners supply the money and runs the business • Corporation: avoid being held personally liable for financial losses
