  2. American Measures • This system of feet, yards, etcetera goes by many different names. A few examples: • English • Household • Customary U.S. Measures • American This presentation will use American or English.

  3. Length 12 inches (in) = 1 foot (ft) 36 inches = 3 feet = 1 yard (yd) 5280 feet = 1 mile (mi)

  4. Temperature • Fahrenheit • F = C + 32 , where C is degrees in Celsius Water freezes at 32F Water boils at 212F

  5. Mass 2 Tablespoons (Tbs) = 1 ounce (oz) 16 ounces = 1 pound (lb) 2000 pounds = 1 ton (T)

  6. Capacity 3 teaspoons (tsp) = 1 Tablespoon 2 Tablespoons (Tbs) = 1 ounce (oz) 8 ounces = 1 cup (c) 16 ounces = 2 cups = 1 pint (pt) 2 pints = 1 quart (qt) = 32 ounces 4 quarts = 1 gallon (gal) = 128 ounces

  10. Metric Mnemonics • Kilo think: Big K, 1000 units • Hecto think: 100 m = 1 hm, hundred begins with “h.” • Deka is 10 units and Deci is 0.1 unit. Both begin with the letter “d”. In Latin, the word dec means ten. “Decade” is 10 years. • Centi is 0.01 unit. The word cent is Latin for one hundred. Think: 100 cents = $1 or “century” is 100 years • Milli is 0.001 unit. The word mil is Latin for one thousand. Think: M is the Roman numeral for 1000 or “millennium” is 1000 years. • Micro is 0.000001 unit. The word itself means very small. • Note: Most of the small units (deci, centi and milli) end in “i”.

  11. Micrograms • Microgram mcg or μg • 1 x 10-6 unit (1 mcg = 0.000001 g) • 1 x 10-3 mg (1 mcg = 0.001 mg) • Commonly used in health care

  12. A few examples… Convert 24 mg to grams: (Move the decimal to the left when converting from a smaller unit to a larger one. One decimal place for every unit you increase.) Convert 15 kilograms to milligrams: (Move the decimal to the right when converting from a larger unit to a smaller one. One decimal place for every unit you decrease.) When you convert between milligram and microgram, move 3 decimal places.

  14. Temperature Conversions If it is 70F outside, how many degrees is that in the Celsius scale? If 37C is normal body temperature, how many degrees is that in the Fahrenheit scale?

  15. NOVA Math Placement Test • The Math Placement test is given in the Testing Center. • There is a review book for the placement exam in the Annandale Library. (CG 3rd Floor) • It’s called Chart Your Success on the Compass Exam. • Brush-up on current skills, go through what you know. • Don’t try to teach yourself anything that you do not know. • Use the list of suggested websites to help you review. • Neither the Math Center nor the Tutoring Center will help you study for the exam.
