ABOUT UNIVERSITY Bhatkhande Music Institute Deemed University is a music institute in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Previously known as Marris College of Hindustani Music was founded by Established in 1926, it was designated a deemed university by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 2000. However, it provides music instruction in Vocal Music, Applied Music, Instrumental Music, Dance, Musicology, as well as Rhythms. This Institute's graduates are there all over the globe, and many are actively working in music teaching and practice. HISTORY Music education in India has a long history, dating back to the time when all education was given in Gurukulas and Ashrams of famous Saints and Rishi-Munis. From the mid-nineteenth century, Britishers put in a system of contemporary institutionalisation of schooling in a hierarchical, time-bound framework. In the early twentieth century, the Indian music school was organised in this manner. Pandit Vishnu DigambarPaluskar and Pandit Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande, two giants of Indian music in this century, popularised two strong and parallel lineages of this institutionalisation of music education and research system. This school was named after the then-Governor of Awadh, Sir William Marris, and was launched as the "Marris College of Hindustani Music." However, on March 26, 1966, the state government of Uttar Pradesh took administration of this institution and named it after its originator, “Bhatkhande College of Hindustani Music.” Besides, the Bhatkhande Music Institute is a self-governing organisation that is under the Societies Registration Act of 1860. INFRASTRUCTURE Library: The Library has all the cutting-edge technologies. Hence, it makes it possible for researchers, students, and music enthusiasts to expand their expertise and skills. The library contains a diverse collection of literature in a variety of languages, including Hindi, English, Marathi, Sanskrit, Urdu, Tamil, Bengali, and Gujarati. Hostels: There are two hostels on campus, one for girls that can encompass 60 students as well as another for boys that can house 15 students.
